So I’ve voted, even though I am extremely wary of any voting system that lets politically ignorant doofuses like myself into the building. I have my “I voted!/Yo votè!” sticker and everything. The sticker is a nice bonus, but I bet they could get way more people to come to the polls if they served punch and pie afterwards. People get proactive for ( Read more... )

Dunno how easy it would be to get tickets, but they've got Tutankamen at the Field Museum right now. I was going to go, but ran out of money for vacation type things. It's supposedly the last time they're going to let it out on tour, but I think that's what they said last time.

Ooh, that's definitely something to keep in mind. I'll have to work out how close my hotel is to various areas of interest. I can always get motivated for mummies.

I was just going to comment-- I went yesterday morning at 9.30 (took me about two hours to see it all, and I'm a slow-moving museum-goer). If you can drag yourself out of bed in time to make it before ten AM, you should totally buy an advance ticket and check it out! It's really incredible. After ten it started to become a bit zoolike, though. XD

OH and I almost forgot to mention the Institute of Art. The Silk Road exhibition stuff is cool, but what really wowed me was the Chinese art and the ginormous room full of European weaponry. Halberds and javelins and pikes, oh my. :D~

Oh man, that sounds like it might be even more up my alley. (That phrase sounds so dirty somehow.) I really enjoyed studying the Silk Road during some of my history classes.

Oh, then you should really go and see it. There didn't seem to be that much in the way of brand-new things on exhibit, it's mostly a rotating selection of new things slotted in with the permanent collection and given new writeups with little Silk Road logos to show how they all 'connect' historically and cross-culturally. (But Yo Yo Ma will be there in April. And Peter Sis was there on Sunday! And the Asian art in the permanent collection is mind-blowing anyhow.)

Yo Yo Ma? Shit, I wish I was going to be there in April. I love his music. My only fear is that when I walk into the museum, I'll have violent flashbacks of all the research I had to do for my senior thesis in college, and wind up whimpering on the floor amidst the Ming vases.

Me too! *_* If I'd known beforehand, I might have postponed my trip a bit longer....

(Ditto about the vases. XD Only with me it was the Japanese Buddhist statues.)

What were you doing in Chicago, anyway?

Apropos of nothing, I love Buddha statues. They're so... Buddha-y.

I went to visit a friend and her sister; they're going to school up there. Lucky bastards. :P

(If you get a chance, ask people to direct you to the (Original) Pancake House-- they have the best Belgian waffle I've ever eaten. And good coffee. And everything else. Really it's a good thing I don't live there; I'd eat breakfast there every single day and be roughly the size of a killer whale.)

So far people have told me to eat Belgian waffles and deep dish pizza. I think I shall rather enjoy this trip.

Well then, in case nobody else tells you, I'll recommend going to the lounge at the top of the Hancock Building for a drink after dark. If you can beat the Japanese tourists to a table by the window, it's especially awesome (and so is the alcoholic coffee!). XD
