Yesterday was an important day in my life, or at least, it could be…
I gave up fast food yesterday. Not forever, but for 12 weeks I’m quitting cold turkey in the hope that after I’ve broken the habit of eating out I can reintegrate it into my eating schedule at a more moderate rate after the 12 weeks are up.
Personally, I feel quitting cold turkey is the only way to go. I know that, say, when people quit smoking they use patches, and gum, and all that other junk but for me, I believe in the fight. It just seems to me that trying to do something that takes an astounding amount of strength (which beating any addiction does) by choosing to give in to your weakness in a lesser way isn’t going to work very well (I’m backed up by the actual success rate of patches and gum by the way).
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not necessarily equating my eating fast food every day to smoking, but at the same time it is an addiction, trust me (although, in all fairness, it’s probably more an addiction to convenience than it is to the actual food). Unfortunately, due to my lifestyle, this is going to mean a lot of meal replacement shakes (I’ve already found I like slimfast over boost by the way) and granola/cereal bars (nutrigrain really are good though). Not exactly the best replacement for a double western bacon cheeseburger but what can you do.
I do have a backup in that I have access to the cafeteria at my work (very cheap too, $20 a month for all the meals you can eat!) but it’s hard to get over there with my hectic work schedule so that’s going to be a last resort. I’ve also given up caffeine just because I was drinking too much of it (3 2-liters a day plus a coke with lunch and dinner).
It’ll be an interesting 12 weeks that’s for sure.
