I awoke this morning to news that my favourite media player Winamp is to be no more, come the 20th of December.
There have been
rumours of Microsoft being interested in both Winamp and SHOUTcast, but these are only rumours at the moment, with no word from Microsoft or AOL/Nullsoft.
One option many users of Winamp, (which include myself) have is for Nullsoft/AOL to release the software as an open source project by releasing Winamp's source code. A
website as well as an on-line
petition has already been set up and is currently close to it's target of 25,000 signatures.
As an owner of a Winamp Pro licence, I have made sure to download the current and last version available (5.666) and burn it to a disc along with a pdf documenting my licence and purchase info. I strongly advise any other users of Winamp to do the same.
