I recently read Harry Turtledove's In the Balance, the first book of his "Worldwar" tetralogy. (No plot summary here, this is all on the cover blurb.) The aliens arrive during WW2, and the main course of the plot is how and whether we overcome our internal divisions and enmities to cooperate against the common enemy.
