Casino Royale by Ian Fleming

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The first James Bond adventure by Ian Fleming. It sets the bar and the tone for the series. It is very much of the time it was written, which means that the pacing is different from many contemporary adventure stories and sexism is rife. The women, who are all exceptionally beautiful, are cardboard cutouts to be conquered. The story, however, is interesting (despite the at times awkward pacing) and exciting. Bond is, of course, Bond, a compelling, charismatic character even from this early adventure. And the story includes one of the best explanations of the rules of baccarat I've ever heard.
