The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

When Pepper is placed in a mental institution, he soon learns that the place is not all that it seems. It works on a very tight budget and the staff seems more interested in keeping the patients complacent on medication than in any actual treatment (or even figuring out if they are mentally ill). Pepper also soon learns that the place is inhabited by a devil whose murderous instincts are reported as suicidal outbursts by the patients. It's an interesting horror novel with some great characters and moments, but I found the narrative voice a bit distracting at times and felt it could use a bit of editing.
