It's never a good sign when the school calls you in the middle of the day

I got home from the gym yesterday and checked the phone. I saw that Aislin's school had called, but there was no message. Hm. Probably not that important, especially since they didn't call my cell phone. Still, I called over there just in case. The secretary wasn't sure but said she'd have the teacher call me if it was urgent ( Read more... )

Risking TMI and personal embarrassment:

Not very often, but until I was about 8, I would occasionally find myself incapable of making it to the bathroom in time to pee. I was just really super-focused on whatever I was doing at the time and wasn't well enough attuned to my bladder's needs and desires to realize I had a problem until it was too late. It was worse at home at night. I had to sleep wearing a diaper until I was 8, as well. Imagine the humiliation at sleepovers. And I wasn't abused or molested until a few years after I figured out the bladder-control issue.

What I'm saying, as a fairly sane and well-adjusted human being, is that it may be inconvenient and unpleasant for everyone involved but we learn and we grow and sometimes certain aspects of biological necessity take us longer to master than one might assume is normal.

The biggest thing I learned from experience was that making it into a big deal can be scarring. I still have bad drams of being in trouble or laughed at for something I had little control over. But I also have fond memories of the sense of hope I'd get if I felt that the offended party was kind and sympathetic.

Thanks for sharing this! Like I said, most of the time I make a non-issue of it and I think her teacher does at school too. Aislin does have supreme focus, especially if she's drawing or socializing. And I think she just doesn't realize she needs to go until the very last second.
