He’s the loner, the tough guy, the man who’ll grit his teeth and crack jokes while he’s gushing blood. Not because he has a high pain threshold, but because he has an audience.

I adored the whole story, but that line is fabulous--I always think of Kirk that way, as someone who's usually "on." And the overall idea--that Kirk and Bones aren't instant friends--is one I absolutely love.

And the Pike/One story is adorbs, as is the little sea critter that inspired it.
