Land Of Talk • Lighting Up The Dark, Your Voice Becomes My Home

Dec 04, 2009 03:15

Just when I despaired that America was taking over the music scene of 2009 with more generic electro, Canada comes back fighting, in the shape of Land Of Talk. Originating from Montreal, these guys are the epitome and possible saviours of Canadian indie/rock...

Sounds like: Emily Haines, Viva Voce, The Jealous Girlfriends

After releasing their first album Applause Cheer Boo Hiss back in 2006, writing the leading song to Canadian indy movie The Tracey Fragments (starring Ellen Page) and subsequently changing band members several times, this 3-piece - led by consistent lead singer / guitarist Elizabeth Powell - seems to have finally found their formula for success.

Land Of Talk set about to make a simple album that would achieve a lot, with very little... in stark contrast to the digi-tweaked indie chic of the current scene. After taking two years out, they came back with the ten-track Some Are Lakes. Since its release in 2008, they've been writing again and late this year released Fun And Laughter EP on the Saddle Creek label, also home to Azure Ray, Bright Eyes and The Rural Alberta Advantage.

Land Of Talk are striking, lyrically and technically, without the use of synths or programmable sounds of any kind - just check out the title track to Some Are Lakes. It's refreshing to find bands nowadays who stick to the raw product of guitars, bass and drums and come out with material where 'rocking' and 'heartfelt' can go hand-in-hand.

These guys and their pounding bass lines - along with Elizabeth's simple, nostalgic and often poignant lyrics - have become instant favourites of mine. All I can hope is that they keep doing it the 'old fashioned way' and don't give in to monotonous mainstream cool.

Check out their video for 'It's Okay' - probably one of the most interesting videos for the most beautiful song I've heard all year...
