Who: Jayne Cobb, Firefly crew; anyone else
What: ZOMBIES
Where: Da Base

Jayne Cobb, mercenary, thug, and general goon, was pelting through the base at breakneck pace, pursued by a small crowd of zombies. The first part of his plan, get to the armory, had gone reasonably well. Most of the guards had been preoccupied fighting zombies and they hadn't ( Read more... )

Mal threw open the door and yanked the other man inside, firing his pistol over the other's shoulder, dropping two zombies before slamming the door shut. He gave the other a grim nod.

"Looks like you got yourself some nice hardware there, Jayne. Too bad y'had to bring along all those guests." He gestured at the door as zombies began banging ineffectually at the steel construction.

"Got anythin' in there for me?"

Jayne rubbed his head ruefully, setting the duffel down with a clank. "Yeah, I think so... Some scatterguns and pistols mostly. Lots of ammo. Grenades. Can never have too many grenades."

He glared at the door, "Damn things won't lay down and die!"

Mal rummaged in the bag, picking out a nice shotgun and beginning to fill his pockets with shells. He glanced over at Jayne. "So basically, they're Reavers, but worse?"

Jayne shook his head. "Nah! They're not as fast as Reavers and they're not as smart either. And they only eat you if they catch you. No rape or torture."

He shrugged, putting a fresh magazine in his rifle. "You hear that?"

Simon hugged the wall and tried to ignore his racing heart. He hadn't armed himself when Mal warned him, he didn't even have his doc kit. He hadn't wasted his earlier time on the base, though. He had a mostly-full vodka bottle with a rag for a stopper in one hand, and a lighter in the other. Boarder-planet cocktail.

He almost sighed with relief when he heard Jayne's voice coupled with bullets. If Jayne had a gun, there was a very good chance they'd get out alive.

He heard the tell-tale shuffle and groan behind him, and forced himself not to flee. He lit the rag and threw the bottle. Flames roared in the corridor behind him, effective incinerating the creatures and also blocking off that route of escape. He turned tail and ran.

"JAAAAAAAAAAAAYNE! HELP!"

The mercenary slammed the door open and blasted a couple of the zombies that had been trying to break in, then tossed a grenade down the corridor towards another clump.

Jayne half-turned towards the scream and almost pulled the trigger as Simon came screaming around the corner.

"Dammit, Doc! Don't get in my line of fire!"

Simon saw the gun pointed in his direction and hit the deck, his momentum causing him to slide and land sprawled at Jayne's feet.

"We might have to worry about my line of fire in a few minutes. River's not here, is she?"

Jayne shrugged. "Haven't seen your crazy sister anywhere. Only been talkin' to here through the computers." He fired another barrage of bullets at a group of zombies, satisfied as one of them dropped to the floor.

"These things are almost as bad as Reavers."

River's wandering the corridors of the base, lost. She doesn't normally get lost, can sense her way around, but there's so much fear and pain in the air that she can't focus on any one thing. Her eyes are closed and she walks close to the wall, as if it'll offer her some sort of protection.

Every so often, she stops stock still, trying to sense Simon, sense anyone else from the crew, but every time she's just met with an assault of screams and screams and screams. So much pain... so much confusion...

She's scared. And in the end she resorts to crying out, trusting that Simon will hear her and find her. Like he always has.

"Simon! Simon!"

"RIVER!" Simon bellows, emptying his clip into the skull of a zombie who had lurched too close for comfort.

He's heard her. He's coming for her. She's safe.

Slowly, she drops to the floor, knees pulled into her chest as she puts her hands over the ears, shaking as she tries to block out the cries, the terror, that's engulfing the base.
