I think I'm in love with my BioSci 1 professor. I took this class because it fulfilled a GER, was only 3 units, and only had a take-home midterm and final. I had no idea what a great professor he was, or how worldly this class would be. My professor's name is Paul Erlich. He's an old, skinny, tall, white guy, but he refuses to be associated in any way with the more famous old white guys of this country (read: politicians). He's just - amazing. A true liberal who has the scientific knowledge and experience to back everything up. He was warning the world about global warming more than a decade ago. In class he wasn't afraid to state his opinions about Iraq, politics and politicians in general, Stanford's more conservative aspects, and life. Even though I agreed with everything he said, he was careful to warn the class to not listen to him, and to make sure we formed our own opinions based on the facts. He said for all we know, he could be some person hired by a leftist underground political group to feed us lies and falsehoods. That's how awesome this guy is. I was kind of sad when no one would come forward when he would ask the class if anyone took issue with the things he said. He reiterated that he didn't know any of our names, and doing so would not in any way affect one's grade. I just wanted to see him obliterate someone who didn't believe that climate change was a definite threat to the world.
Having him as a professor made me realize that although the world is *really* fucked up right now, there are knowledgeable mature people who realize the sad state of the world and are actively trying to do things to change it. He makes me want to major in Biological Science and be an Environmental Studies Major and educate these stupid people on Capitol Hill about the world they're trying to dictate.
I think more so than any other professor, this guy has constantly made me feel lucky about where I'm studying right now.
