In June 2004 I bought a Toshiba Satellite from BestBuy for $1399. (Both the Toshiba and BestBuy were poor choices.) It was my first laptop ever, and I loved it, when it wasn't cutting off randomly, overheating, failing to connect to the powersource unless i jiggled all the wires evbery three seconds making super loud noises with the fan, overheating, giving me the blue screen of death, and did I mention overheating? (these were the abuses and indignities i suffered through to be able to play at h_e, rp, and read the pr0n on a daily basis.)
The smartest thing about my purchase was the $279/3 year extended warranty, which a lot of people think is a ripoff. It's the reason why I'm now being given a new computer. BestBuy has a "no lemon" policy that states after 3 repairs, the 4th time you bring it in they'll replace it with a unit of similar performance/price. I'm a bit concerned about the peformance angle of this, since my computer only had an 80GB hard drive. it seems like it's standard for them to have at least 120 GB now and DVD burners are very common. But, in the best case scenario that they focus mostly on the price, and not the fact that my old laptop didn't have a built-in web cam or 2gb system RAM, or in the middle-case scenario where they'll let me pay the difference, which should I get?

I'm a bit nervous about the switch to the Mac, as I'm very, very good with Windows and its software, and because (as far as I know/think) certain applications I use don't work with Macs. (Yes, I know I can run XP on a Mac, but I've heard certain applications are very slow). I'm nervous about the Vaio because it's got Vista (DO.NOT.WANT), and will be prebundled with a lot of crap, plus PCs are magnets for viruses/spyware and are notoriously unstable. But it's got more. . stuff (bigger hard drive, faster memory, etc).
I use my computer primarily for storing photos, surfing the internet, word processing, watching movies/listening to music, and downloading both. I don't game, and the only thing I really use photo software for is just touching up photos/resizing/etc.
