Summer Vacation, Day 5
Dear Diary,
Well, Flemington, NJ is not quite like anything I could ever have imagined. All the houses are so far apart from one another, and you really do have to drive to get to somewhere with buildings that aren't residential. Either that, or walk for a good 20 or so minutes (I'll know more precisely when I actually do it). I feel as though I'm in the country, but I know that's not quite right. Like I said, though, I never could have imagined a place like this. It's just too far out of the sphere of my experience.
Dan's family is incredibly nice. I couldn't have imagined that either*. They're nice, and calm, and comfortable, and realaxing.... In other words, almost the complete opposite from my family (we're nice enough most of the time). His mother is sooooo cute, and has a high voice but not one that will get on your nerves. Dan and his dad still strike me as being similar, though not so much in terms of looks now that I've been around them both for an extended period of time. They both get excited over what I would consider more obscre sports: Dan likes XC, his dad likes cycling. And his sister is a sweetheart, and way cool because she can play music from The Lord of the Rings on the piano. What's more, she does it well.
Dan's at work now, his parents are at church, and I think his sister is in her room. Up until about 10 or so minutes ago I was reading Great Books by David Denby. So far I've read about The Iliad and about The Hymn to Demeter and poetry by Sappho. It's like taking a really fun literature class without having any homework or obligation. Leastways, no obligation to anyone other than myself.
I have to call my mum and wish her a happy Mother's Day. *rolls eyes* Fun stuff. And I have to talk to my dad about whether or not I can have one day off a week while working for him this summer. If I could have that one day off I might be able to get an internship at a Heyday Books, a publishing company in Berkeley, CA. Coincidentally, the very same publishing company that put out The Ohlone Way, that book we pre-Paidea kids had to deal with our freshman year of high school. They do a lot of stuff related to California history and literature, which would be perfect if I could get it. I've got to sit down and make myself write a cover letter and rework my resume first. Blah.
Rich Harden is pitching for the A's today! I'm excited, because for the first time in I don't know how long, I'll actually have a chance to watch the A's game on TV. Of course, because I'm still on the East Coast, this is only happening because the A's are playing the Yankees. Whatever though, because the Yankees are in last or second to last (who cares which???) place in the AL East right now and Rich Harden is my boy. He'll shut them down like no body's business. *knock on wood*

*Contrary to what some people may think I'm implying here, it's not that I didn't think Dan would have a nice family. It's more the degree that astonishes me, because I didn't really realize that people like this existed anywhere other than in books and movies.
