6.2

Jan 20, 2014 08:01

We had a lovely morning, the last with our guests before they flew back to Auckland signalling the end of my book sale for another year.

It wasn't long after getting home from waving them goodbye that we got back into our usual hobbies and pursuits; Gary back on his flight sim tweaking and me back to a neglected assignment. I snuck off for a quiet read and an afternoon sleep which was somewhat disturbed by a 6.2 earthquake centred only 50 km away. This was, without doubt, the 'biggest' earthquake I've experienced and the first where (as an adult) I have sheltered in the doorway. (Biggest is such a tricky term in earthquakes since there are so many ways to measure them. In this case it can be taken that it was the one that felt most likely to damage me!)

Mocha, our younger cat, took off when the quake hit and stayed outside for about half an hour whereas Sam strolled back in from his garden nest and snuggled up close to me at my desk.

Not that we stayed there as we went out to check on the neighbours (all fine) and have a restorative cuppa at 'disaster central' - the neighbours house where we always seem to gather when the power goes out or the earth shakes.

So, that was something different for a Monday afternoon.
