My body feels on fire when I wake and I haven’t the strength to move yet. I am vaugely aware of not being in my own home. I raise a hand to rub my eyes and turn my head and see the last person I expect.
“Vincent?”
“Hey, good to see you awake. How do you feel? Know where you are?”
“Horrible and I have no idea.”
“You’re at St. Mungo’s. You got bit by a fever fern.” He gives me a sheepish smile. “Draco asked me to come down and see you.”
“Why didn’t he come himself.”
I somehow feel indignant. Usually my son and I talk every week but he apparently forgot to call me yesterday evening. Now I’m sick and he can’t even -
“He’s been quarantined two floors up, along with everyone else in the lab.”
“What?” my voice squawks and I cough heartily, struggling to sit up.
Vincent puts his face in his hands. “Some stupid newbie came in yesterday morning with an illegally crossbred meat-eating tropical flower that he’d watered in human blood. Damn thing went to seed, pods exploded and everyone… just…” his shoulders tremble and he bursts into giggles. “Aw fuck I can’t even SAY it. They’re… like… implanted… and there’s…. teeny little seedlings are growing out of their skin!”
There is a long pause where he just laughs while I stare at him.
“… Are you fucking serious?”
He snorts and tries to get a hold on his giggles. “How could I make up something like ‘I’m sorry your son can’t see you because he’s infested with tiny carnivorous plants?’”
“You raise a valid point.” I lean back on the bed, taking a good look at my hands and immediately finding the bandaged fern bite, throbbing and red on my right thumb. “The Malfoy men felled by herbology. God I know so many people who would laugh at this.”
Vincent tries to get his laughter under control again and I roll my eyes at him.
“Oh laugh all you want, you don’t know enough of my secrets for me to care about your snickering.”
“Oh good, just Draco that wants to kill me then.” He lets out delighted sigh and wipes at his eyes. “He looked like he was going to punch through the glass and strangle me when we saw him at the window. At least that’s what Greg said he looked like, I couldn’t look at him for more than a few seconds without laughing until I couldn’t breathe.”
“Oh I’m sure he’s just pleased as punch with you then.”
“I’m a dead man when the quarantine is up. But that’s two weeks from now. Hopefully he’ll be too attention starved and rangy from being trapped with Longbottom for so long to be mad at me.”
“Make him macaroni and cheese. Don’t tell him why you did it, just do it. He’ll forgive you.”
He gives me an odd little smile. “You’re just full of useful information aren’t you?”
“I was right about the ring wasn’t I?”
“You’re right about most things, although I don’t quite understand why you tell me so much of that stuff.”
His voice has grown quiet now and he’s looking at his hands. We’ve hit that awkward moment, the same one I reach every time with him and with Gregory. Where they don’t know what to say to me and I’m too uncertain to say what I’m thinking.
Maybe it was the fever getting to me this time.
“Vince, you and Greg are both good to my boy, I have no reason to act like you’re any less than sons in law to me. Draco telling me about the both of you with him was - well, it was awkward, I admit that. But his mother and I…”
He’s looking at me now, quietly surprised and I shut my eyes as if tired so that I can keep talking and squash that fluttering creature in my chest. I’m the parent here, shouldn’t HE be nervous for MY approval dammit?
“Narcissia and I think the world of you two, even if we never tell you so. You’re both as good a people as we would have hoped for Draco to be with when he was older, even if we were expecting you to be only one person… and female…”
His voice is a whisper, thick with emotion.
“Thank you. I… that means very much to know that.”
I look up at the ceiling. You’re delirious old man, you’re not relieved to hear that, it should be the other way around…
“Good then. I… I’m sorry, I’m tired.”
“I’ll let you get some sleep, okay. I’ll let Draco know you’re all right. Rest well.”
He moves to the door, pauses there for a moment.
I know what he’s waiting for so I meet his gaze again and smile just a little. He looks like the weight of the world is off his shoulders, and somehow I feel a little lighter myself.
“Tell my son I said hello.”
