la la la ZOMG BOOK MADNESS

Last night I got mugged by Engaging Narrative. It's been a while since I started a book so gripping that I just Kept Reading even though a small voice in the back of my head eventually said 'um um it's past 12 on a school night? you should um go to sleep? now? maybe?' and then, when the eyestrain forced me to pass out, wake up only a few hours later so I could finish it this morning before work.

Yeah, I knew that the combination of Sarah Monette and Elizabeth Bear* would prove *good*, I just wasn't prepared for how utterly crack-tastic A Companion to Wolves would be.**

I keep starting and deleting this paragraph so I can't say anything other than this is a really good book; it uses a Norse setting which I really enjoy; the authorial tone is consistent with the setting; the world mythology is consistent with the setting; they use the set-up to do a bit of examining of gender roles and assumptions but not in a didactic or irritating way. It's just Very Nicely Done all over.

*two of the best, and my favourite, sci-fi/fantasy writers currently publishing
**warning: it turns out they are both yaoi fangirls so if you can't cope with Teh Gay, don't read but you will lose out on a fantastic book.
