Yesterday, I got to play with the iPod Classic. I love its look and capacity and, unlike other people, I am loath to declare this particular flavour of iPod on the brink of extinction. Four, eight and sixteen gig flash-based players simply lack capacity and, to be quite honest, as much as I love the interface and the look of the iPod Touch, it's a dumbed-down PDA, not a souped up iPod. Simply put, my iPod is a mass storage device that is used to store and play back my music collection. Therefore the 160 gig iPod classic, which it is overkill for most people, is a dream-come-true for me. I want all that capacity. I crave it. I love the fact that, when I put my 30 gig iPod on shuffle, it'll hit me with songs that I've never heard before. And that's what the bigger iPods are all about: having everything you love at your fingertips, and then a whole slew of stuff that you plan to get around to listening to.
I hope that Apple doesn't phase out this part of their product line because I honestly don't see my needs being fulfilled by either the iPod Nano or Touch (until a 32 or 64 gig version of that latter product becomes available) because for me, iPods are about music, and everything else is just icing on the cake. And with respect to the iPhone, its primary use is as a communicaitons device/pda, the iPod functions are simply a value-added feature and it would not serve as my primary ipod because of this.
