We've started the move. We're leaving our twentieth-floor two-bedroom apartment and moving into a circa 1940's upper duplex next Thursday. We are taking all the small stuff ourselves, leaving only the big pieces for the movers. It's a lot of work and, as you may already know, during a move one discovers just how much junk is laying around taking up space. Unfortunately I'm a clutterbunny and will propably move all my juck with me and sort it out there.
We were a bit worried about the new space because we have 1,100 square feet here and we're down to 900 at our second-floor digs, and the new layout does pose some challenges: there is much less closet space, the master bedroom and office are much smaller, and there is only one full bathroom. However the kitchen, living room and dining room are larger and it has a fireplace, a sunroom, and a bonus room next to the living room which will probably serve as a walk-in closet. We also get about 300 square feet of storage in the basement, a garage, and a gorgeous shade garden in the back, which we share with the guys who live downstairs. The major catch is that the subway runs behind the house, so we get noise from the trains, but I have been assured that we will quickly acclimatize to this.
With every load of stuff we haul, the new place seems more like home. We are starting to see its potential and mentally planning where things will go and we are seeing some definite plusses to the new layout. For starters, we can entertain more people in the common areas. Also, the sunroom now becomes the guest room, so I no longer lose my workspace when friends and family visit. And the place just feels better. It's not a big modern box. It's not entirely logically laid out, but the layout has its charms and there's a sense of coziness that was missing here.
I think we're going to be very happy with it.
