The Truth about Cats and Dogs

Aug 13, 2007 18:10

I am back from Montreal, sans one 18-55mm Canon EF lens (which was stolen in the Old Port), less one abstract painting by John (which is currently on exhibit at the SCA's national exhibit at Ogilvy's) and up one 8 year-old terrier/mix named Azure (once my dad's dog and now ours). It was a strange and wonderful trip, with splashes of stupidity (lousy service and bland food at Chez Stash, a Polish restaraurant to be avoided at all costs) and bad hotel service (At the Delta Centreville, which those of you who attended WFC 2001 experienced first hand). There were also moments of serendipity. I got my poutine and tourtière fixes (Louigi's on McGill street for the former, and Au Pain Doré on Peel for the later). And I enjoyed a delicious breakfast and a decidedly chill ambience at Food (part of the Sky complex on the corner of Ste-Catherine and Alexandre-de-Sêves.)

Safely back in Toronto, I'm enjoying our new canine companion and watching the unfolding soap opera as he and the feline move from wariness, through détente, toward peaceful co-existence, and hopefully some form of bonding that will result in friendship. Azure sleeps on the sofa while I write and Kitty On hides, coming out of various secret pockets to scowl for introducing a new variable into her domain, and to deman obeissance and attention. She has come into the room on several occasions and glared at the dog, who is utterly non-plussed. Yesterday night, Azure slept on his bed in the corner, while kitty slept on the bed at John's feet, so we know they can be in the same room together. The only tension was when I returned from walking Azure and doggie was so hyper as to freak her out. It's all like watching a chess game, knowing full well that Kitty On has checkmated the dog but he has yet to figure it out.

This is so much better than television
