I thought for a little while there that the first 6 eps of "Love Rain" might have ruined me for other kdramas for life, but just today I managed to watch a bit of "King 2 Hearts" without gagging, so I suppose there's hope for me yet.
I have read that the PD for "Love Rain" is the one who did all those hallyu-establishing "seasons dramas" (perhaps the most famous is "Winter Sonata") but I've never actually seen any of those so I can't comment. What I can say is that it's beautifully, beautifully shot, and a lot of it was shot ahead of time so the storyline hasn't been derailed by reactions to the ratings (which have not been that great, but are inching upward) but has been following a detailed path toward toward the director's desired conclusion (not that I know what that is yet). And the performances (yes, even YoonA's) are wonderful.
Watching Jang Geung Seuk portray a character realizing that his former iron self-discipline and emotional isolation and social integrity was crumbling in the face of an emotional tidal wave and not only could he not resist, he didn't even want to, was a whole lot of fun. Maybe I'll go back and watch it again on hulu... I mean, I don't think it happens that way irl, but wouldn't it be nice if it did?
And the 21st century eps so far are holding the line, I'll have to see how 7 & 8 balance it out (because then we'll have 4 eps of the 80s story and 4 of the 2012 story to compare).
If you don't want to spend 4 hours on the backstory you can just watch this MV and then plunge right in--

I haven't been this captivated by anything in a while ♥ I hope it lasts! And that even though it's a melodrama, nobody gets beaten with sticks, or golf clubs, or violin bows.
I've also realized that I just CAN'T watch any more Game of Thrones, I am too tenderhearted. Five seconds of Arya-disguised-as-a-boy was too much for me. And there's worse to come.
