Chapter Three

One Day Before Dean’s Due in Hell

Dean wakes up with sweat covering his forehead, beading across his lips and rolling down his chest. He has no current sense of time, but yet he can feel it in his bones that it isn’t his time yet. Being completely honest with himself, Dean was scared. He was scared to die, scared to be tortured in hell, scared to end up alone; most importantly though, he was scared to die without saying goodbye to his Sammy. He had been trying to call Sam every night for the past few months, but he always got his voicemail and knowing him, he’s probably left hundreds and they’ve all been deleted. Every time his phone is never picked up, his heart crumbles just a little bit more but he pushes the thought aside, and continues on with his life. He knows his Dad watches him like a hawk now, and it must be hard, but his father is tough, he’ll pull through. He gets out of the bed, pulls on a sweater he once stole from Sam that was his favourite, that Sam always wore and smells it, remarkably surprised it still smells like Sammy after all of these years. He doesn’t care though, because for one minute, he can pretend that Sam never left. When he’s dressed, he opens the door and heads down the hallway that appears out of nowhere and can hear voices screaming at one another, and he’s curious, but he’s hesitant. He has no idea how these people would react to being eavesdropped on but it isn’t until he hears his father’s voice that he just decides to screw it and go to the main room and listen in, maybe offer a word or two.

“I don’t know why my son trusts you, or what’s so special about you but for fucks sake, leave him alone. You’re not the one for him. You’re a demon. You can’t be trusted.” That’s his father’s voice and he has to slow down his pace to stop from running at his father. Yes, he’s only watching out for him but for Christ sake, he isn’t a child.

When he finally gets to his father, he sees Kyle look over at him, face flushed in anger and pretty soon, his father and Bobby are looking back while Ellen is talking to Jo and Bela. Dean walks over to his father, put’s his hand on his shoulder, and calmly tells him how he feels but next thing he knows, Ammolite and Miles are standing next to Kyle and Ammolite is glaring at John.

“Not all demon’s are bad, John.” She growls, her fists clenching and unclenching, her breathing trying to be regulated. Dean sees his father stare her down, not backing up an inch in any form. He sees his father roll his eyes, and bites his lip in worry over what his father will do now.

“Demons cannot be trusted. They lie constantly; they have a bunch of reasons behind every little thing to do, a reason why they’re doing it, a reason just for themselves. You are demons; therefore, you cannot be trusted, especially with my eldest son.” Dean groans and puts his face in his hands and when he looks up he sees Ammolite’s hair spread all around her, wind flowing through it.

“We can be trusted, especially with your damn son. For fucks sake, Winchester, we could’ve killed all of you months ago. We could have been done with this.”

“Right, because you just have the ways. What, you have ways to instantaneously kill us without us knowing?”

“YES! It’s simple actually; it’s the fact that Kyle is holding the very hounds that are suppose to come kill Dean tom---“

“AMMOLITE!” Kyle yells, his fingertips turning bright red with flames on the edges of them. Dean’s head snaps to Kyle, his eyes wide in shock and when their eyes meet Dean feels a pain in his heart, realizing he couldn’t trust the guy.

“Dean, it isn’t like that, I swear-“

“Shut up. Shut up, SHUT UP.” He yells, tears coming down his cheeks. He can see Kyle bite his lip, tears coming down his own cheeks and he almost begins to feel bad. Almost.

“Dean, plea-“

“Well, well, well, look what we have.” Everyone tenses up at that voice, curious and afraid as to how Azazel could have possibly gotten into the place. Dean notices that Kyle doesn’t bother looking and he realizes that the demon bastard probably knew all along that Azazel was coming for him. Dean turns away from the person he let himself trust for no such reason and glares at the yellow-eyed bastard.

“What are you doing here, asshole?” He growls, fed up with everything and everyone.  He just wants the past five years to never have happened and he definitely just wants to go back to the night Sam left and stop him from leaving.

“Well, I’m here to collect some dues, Dean.”

“What are you talking about, you bastard?” Dean growls back, trying so hard not to look at the enigma that is known as Kyle.

“I’m talking about Jo and Bela. I’m here to collect their souls.” Dean scrunches up his face, before looking at the two females, wondering what the hell they have to do with anything. He takes a close look at their faces and just like yesterday, he can see the fear in their eyes, which have gone wide. Their breaths are coming in low pants and they’re both shaking, holding on to one another like they don’t want to lose one another.

“What the hell are you talking about?” That was Ellen, and she was definitely a force to handle when she was pissed. Her stance is tight; her hair swept back, the ends curly in a way that seem frizzy. Azazel looks over to her and grins an evil grin before walking towards her. Dean can tell that Ellen wants to move, to back herself into somewhere safe and cozy but he can tell that she knows doing such a thing would admit fear and end up killing her, and Ellen is definitely too stubborn to be killed by such a thing.

“I mean, five years ago, I let your daughter and her best friend make a deal with me. Now, it’s time to collect their payment.” Dean sees Ellen choke back a gasp, instead glaring at the demon and scrunching up her fists.

“We paid our deal you bastard, with the souls we let you have instead of ours!” Everyone turns to stare at Jo at that sentence, shock marring their features, curious at how Jo could let people die for her and how, most importantly, she could do such a horrible thing. She looks over at them briefly before rolling her eyes and looking back at the demon. All traces of fear that were in her facial features are gone, a stoic calmness settling over her, almost like she had no fear. She appears cocky and confident enough to make it seem like she believes she’ll get out of this alive, but Dean has a clue that she is sadly mistaken.

“Oh Jo-“ Azazel chuckles, walking towards her instead.

“What?”

“Did you really think that killing those three people for me was going to be your debt?” He finishes, stepping up so close to Jo that Dean cannot help but have a tinge of fear for the young woman.

“Yes, I did, especially since we agreed that in order to get what we want, we’d offer you the seven souls of the people you wanted!” Jo screams back, her fists clenching and her body going forward, right up into the demons space. Bela tries to stop her, she knows better, but it’s too late. Jo is out of control, angry and afraid; Never a good thing for a female hunter about to die shortly.

“And I lied! Like John Winchester said, demons lie, Jo. Surely you had at least some idea that I’d come back for your souls?” Azazel smiles, his teeth a rotting yellow color.

“Kyle, hand over the dogs.” Dean looks back to Kyle, for the first time noticing how pale he really is, like having Dean find out he held his dogs absolutely killed him. Kyle sets his mouth in a firm line, before shaking his head in a resounding no.

“Kyle, now!”

“No, Azazel. If I let you have these dogs, you’re going to kill Jo and Bela with them and then turn around and kill Dean with them, and I can’t let you do that.”

“You can’t let me do that because it’s a day early or because of who Dean really is to you, Kyle?” Kyle puts his head down for a brief moment and when he rises it up again, his eyes are burning with a fire so bright that Dean can’t help but look at his father and let him see the fear in him.

“You know the reason why Aza---“

“Of course it’s because of what Dean means to you, Kyle. Why does he mean so much? It’s not like he ever came and got you out of hell.”

“Because he didn’t know I was in there in the first place, you asshole.” Kyle growls; stepping close to Azazel, his eyes turning a dark hazel that Dean has rarely seen. Azazel grins, steps even closer to Kyle than before, and touches his shoulder, keeping him from flinching away.

“You were tortured for five years, you had no one come for you even though you were screaming for help and yet, here you are, willing to die for Dean Winchester, and take his place in Hell.” Leering, Kyle pushes Azazel back and Dean can’t help but feel confused. He’s told that Kyle has the dogs that are suppose to kill him tomorrow, and fuck, tomorrow, yet he’s also being told that Kyle won’t do anything.

“What happens if the dogs don’t come after me tomorrow?” Dean blurts out suddenly, causing everyone’s attention to turn to him instead of the two demons currently fighting.

“The dogs don’t come after you only if Kyle here throws your contract in a pit of home-made fire. I highly doubt he’ll be doing that anytime soon,” Azazel replies, leering at Dean before going back to Kyle.

“I will most definitely be doing that, no worries there you bastard,” Kyle replies, his fists clenching, his body aiming backwards, a fighting stance if Dean’s ever seen one.

“You think so? How can you possibly think so?” With a quick slash of Azazel’s hand, Dean keels down in pain and clutches his stomach, trying hard not to scream in pain. He quickly see’s Kyle’s eyes go wide before he looks down at his clutched stomach and sees a whole bunch of blood splattering out of it, and he can’t help but gulp back fear, and search for his father’s eyes.

Just as he’s about to faint, he spots Kyle biting into his own flesh, and then running towards him, mumbling at him to drink his blood. He’s against it at first, because hello, vampire much? However, a quick look into Kyle’s eyes and Dean can feel the pain that Kyle must feel for him, if he’s offering his own blood. He looks paler than before, his forehead is sweaty and damp and Dean wonders if he’ll turn into a demon by drinking his blood. As if reading his mind, Kyle quickly tells him he’ll stay human, he just has to ‘drink the god damn blood al-fucking-ready’ and Dean does so, sipping it greedily.

He soon begins to feel power go back into him, enough to notice that Azazel is pinned to the wall, struggling to free himself, Miles and Ammolite are struggling to hold onto these huge dogs, which Dean can only assume are hellhounds and Jo and Bela are being blocked from escaping by Jo’s mother, who is holding a furious glare at them.

He looks for his father, his uncle Bobby and when he finds both of them, he tells them, as if he’s going to die.

“Find and tell Sammy I love him.”
