so you wrap your hank of yarn around the swift (looks like a wooden clothes rack thing), and then attach it to the ball winder (looks kind of like it should be part of a satellite or something. there's a spool and a crank and it somehow all works) and wind it up. webs is where i got mine, there's a few on this page (scroll down)... though i wouldn't have shelled out for the wooden swift had it not been a gift: it's fancy and pretty, but FANCY.
it's one of the few patterns i've ever made that isn't explicit in its directions (ie. knit 2 rows, on row 37 do this, etc.) and is written in more of a narrative manner, so despite the fact that it's all in garter stitch, it's a challenge to follow directions *exactly*... i think it's going well so far!
Wow... that baby sweater looks so cool. I'm looking forward to the day I can knit a sweater -- for me or anyone else. I just picked up yarn for a fancy scarf pattern and GAVE UP. I'm serious. Too hard for me. I'm such a visual person, and need very explicit instructions (not the pattern I had) or I won't get it right. So, what I'm saying is: I admire you.
well, thank you :) but it's really not as hard as it seems, just practice and looking up knitting videos on the internet when i get stuck.
didn't you get all the yarn for the hourglass sweater? go for it! sweaters are really not that hard at all, by this point you've learned all the skills you'll need to make one.

Make sure there's no way baby can pull those buttons off.
