At work, I'm on the Activities Committee, which basically organizes parties that involve extended lunch-breaks and food. Next month we're having a Cinco de Mayo party. I guess it should have been clear there would be a problem when the president of the committee asked 1) What Cinco de Mayo was and 2) When Cinco de Mayo was.
Yesterday, we had this extremely awkward conversation. I'd like to say it was just the one woman, but there were maybe 5 others involved.
Secretary: So, the plan is to have a taco bar for the party. We can have a list of items we need and people can sign up on the list.
Me: Maybe in addition, people can bring in other Mexican foods as well, since we won't need that many people for taco ingredients.
President: >doubtfully< Well what do people in Mexico eat besides tacos?
Me: >several seconds of stunned silence< Well. There is quite a lot of Mexican food besides tacos...
Girl 1: Someone should research this!
Girl 2: >beaming< How about chips and salsa!
Girl 2: Or beans and rice!
Others in room: >go mad<
It's true that my understanding of Mex is heavily tainted with Tex, but really? Is that all we know about Mexican cuisine?
