It was a little tradition of theirs. Ever since Peter was five, Nathan would come in at the exact time of his birth with two big pieces of chocolate cake in hand, and this year was no exception. Nathan lit the last candle and set off, two plates of double chocolate cake in hand.

Nathan found Peter on the roof, laid out with his pillow and blanket, staring up at the stars. More often than not he could find Peter here. He said it was where he went to ponder. Nathan scooted down next to him, which was no easy task with a two plates in his hand. “It’s 1:55, Happy Birthday Pete” he said, handing over the piece with eighteen candles sticking out of it. Peter smiled and sat up, taking the plate and blowing out the candles.

“How old are you now?” Nathan said as Peter examined the slice.

Peter rolled his eyes, but answered anyway, in a lackluster sing-song voice. “I am 18 years old now.”

It took everything in him not to laugh. That segment of their little tradition used to be Peter favorite part, but since he was now old enough to be embarrassed by it Nathan didn’t expect much enthusiasm. He was pleased that Peter responded at all. He saw nothing of the sullen, rebellious teen his parent described to him week after week. Pushing all negative thoughts out of his head he dug his fork into his cake. He and Peter sat in silence for the next few minutes, just enjoying each others company and their cake.

“You’re freaking 18 now! I didn’t think you’d make it.” Nathan said suddenly, slapping Peter on the shoulder.

Peter snickered, nearly choking on his cake in the process. “Yeah I’m just a big blight on the family.”

Nathan shook his head. “You’ll never be a blight to me. I actually think you’re one of the bright spots in our family tree.” He wiped at the icing at the corner of Peter mouth with his thumb as he said this; making sure his eyes were level with Peter’s.

Peter looked over his slice again “So…exactly how did you fit eighteen candles onto this?”

Nathan just laughed and shook his head. He pulled Peter close and kissed his forehead “I love you Peter; Happy Birthday.”
