Nathan hadn’t made it home in time for Peter’s seventh birthday party. He got home just before midnight. He went in to Peter’s room intending to give him his birthday present and found the bed empty.
When he went in to his room, his little brother was sound asleep in his bed. Nathan shook his shoulder. “It’s still your birthday for five more minutes, or don’t you want your present?”
Peter looked at him a little blearily and gave a huge gapped smile. “You’re home.”
“Yeah.” He handed Peter the gift - a navy G.I. Joe wrapped in a Peter sized Naval Academy t-shirt. To his surprise Peter seemed more excited by the shirt.
“It’s just like the one you wear to do exercises!” And there was that gap-toothed grin again.
“I hope you like it.”
Peter nodded, clearly not used to late nights. “Can I stay here?”
“Sure, Pete.”
When Nathan came back to bed, Peter was curled in to a tight ball with his new t-shirt hugged to him. He dropped a kiss on his brother’s cheek and settled in to sleep.
