ugh so i’m going to address this thing for once and for all. JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE IS TALENTED DOESN’T MEAN THEY HAVE TO BE DOING ALL THE T HINGS AT ONCE.
Case study; SM artists are often bashed because they pre-record live vocals and have band members lip sync. I literally have NO problem with this at all, it doesn’t make me like someone more or appreciate them more because they sing live AND dance till they’re out of breath. on a live performance (that is RECORDED to be shown on telly and uploaded to the internet so that the whole world sees it) like EXO’s Growl I have NO PROBLEM with the fact that they lip sync….
i’d just like to add that i KNOW what their voices sound like (in the case of exo) i’ve seen clips of them singing live (unfortunately, being on the other side of the world, i can only talk about the resources i’ve got on the internet- bigbang are the only k-group i’ve seen live ashadkjhsadjaj memoriiieeess) so i KNOW kyungsoo has an amazing voice…i KNOW suho, lay and luhan have lovely voices but aren’t neccesarily *strong* vocals.
ALSO, this doesn’t even take into consideration the fact of different music genres…many songs just aren’t made to sing live - a few of f(x)’s songs just wouldn’t sound right…in a situation where the vocals are matched to the song literally what is the point in singing live. much of the sounds you are hearing on those tracks have been made by a computer…it’s never going to sound right live. unless…the other option for songs like that is to make them into a ballad version, where the vocals take precedence (that’s fine, if exo did a ballad version of growl and didn’t sing live then my argument would be different entirely) like when 2ne1, who do a lot of computerised dance music, sung that ballad version of lonely…brilliant. either, or. you cant jump and sing well
have you ever tried to exercise and talk…it’s hard, nigh on impossible. and singing with all of the lungs while out of breath is even harder. did pavarotti do complicated, physically demanding choreography (that’s a nice image to have) while he was singing…no, (aside from the fact he wasn;t a k-idol; another nice image) to sing your absolute best and also keep in formation and remember the dance moves and do them well all at the same time just insn’t possible with many kpop songs.
yes, there are acts who do sing live and dance but you’ll notice (like bap's daehyun) that often the strongest singer still struggles…what’s the point of compromising the whole performance because of some ridiculous standard. this is kpop, the dances (more so for boybands, methinks) are complex and difficult. it is unnecessary strain for them, they are performers, entertainers…although bap often do many live perfs you can see how strained the vocals are and how they aren’t able to put all of their effort into singign.
i’m just 5000000000000000000000% done with people saying groups like exo aren’t talented because bap and shinee sing LIVE and do the DANCES TOO…and i’m like, if I was the manager of these groups i wouldn’t want to put that level of stress on ANYONE, especially when they’re promoting and performing ALL the time. (or, conversely when they are a relatively NEW group, like exo) and before you start…theres no comparison to beyonce or other acts…they aren’t in kpop, they don’t have rridiculous schedules that mean they get like 3 hours sleep, are living on cup ramyun, spend all day stressed because they have to be entertaining in interviews and shows and radio and photoshoots and on top of this have to perform back to back intense choreography and vocals.
hey, matt bellamy has amazing vocals…i bet you a billion dollars they wouldn’t sound half as good if he was dancing wolf.
