the crux of the jux

Planned a dinner with Kate Schlachter tonight, to catch up while she was in town and discuss the recent single-ness. Her friend Kailee was stranded at OHare, so she came out too, and we ate dinner at Earwax with the friendly attendance of Matt, The Guy I See Around At Thrill Jockey Music Stuff and Who Knows WLUW people. Oh, and Mary Nisi, Dustin Drase, and K-Marx were eating in the back. Upon the suggestion of Matt and those three, our Knoxian party heads towards the Burlington to catch Mike spin some records. Liz K. was the bartender, caught up with her, and Sharon of Grand Theft Radio was sitting at the arm of a be-froed white hipster seeming to hide that she was "so sad" from everyone but Kate. after they left the bar, we took their table, placing me squarely between two groups of friends. Mary ribbed me - "where do you find all these hot young women? - oh wait, you're only 24." Meanwhile, Kailee drank confidently with her almost unnecessary fake ID, and I recalled how few of my Knox memories and contacts survived into her world there (she's four years younger, the same as my brother - Kate only became so close with her because she did post-bac for an extra year).

There i was, catching smiles for a young boy, giving them in return to two girls who hadn't yet been outside the comforts of the academic life. How old am I, anyways? Rolling peaches in trousers and eating seaweed salads with mermaids.
