Two months ago, when Dominic had asked Matthew to move to New York City so he could attend culinary school, Matthew hadn't hesitated one bit. Of course it meant moving four hours away from his job, and their friends, and the small house they shared together, but Matthew would have done anything to allow Dominic to achieve his dream of becoming a chef.
Living in a tiny one-bedroom apartment had been a learning experience to say the least. Most mornings the two of them were stepping on each other's toes as they got ready to leave for work and school, and the fact they didn't have a kitchen table meant they spent most nights eating on the loveseat couch, snuggled together to swap stories about their days. It was a change of lifestyle that, although it took some adjusting, Matthew wouldn't change for anything. If it meant that he could hold Dom in his arms as he drifted off to sleep at night, it was okay with him.
Matthew had gone to sleep early that night; the busy day finally taking the toll on the brunet. He had pressed a kiss to Dominic's neck, and gave his thigh a tight squeeze.
"You're coming to bed soon, right?" Matthew has asked
Dominic had nodded with a yawn, as he turned his head back to the textbook that he had been concentrating on.
"Yes. I'll be there soon." Dominic assured him
Matthew had pressed one last kiss to the top of the blonds head, and walked the short distance toward their bedroom. That had been hours ago, and so when Matthew woke at the sound of loud noises coming from the kitchen, he was shocked to roll over and find that it was three in the morning. Dominic wasn't in bed with him, so Matthew had to guess that it was in fact Dominic, making the noises in the kitchen. He rolled out of bed, slipped on his boxer shorts, and scrubbed at his face with the heel of his hand, as he padded down the hallway to the kitchen.
"Why are you still awake Dominic?" Matthew asked the blond
Dominic looked up from the bowl he was holding in his hands, and his face turned into an apologetic smile.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up, I just can't….I just can't get this cream right."
The blond slammed his hand down on the counter, a cloud of flour rising up into the air and into Dominic's face. Matthew's sleepy face twisted into a smirk, and he couldn't help but giggle.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to." The brunet said, covering his face with his hands
"We've been working with desserts the past few days, and now we've started making cannoli's, and I can't get the cream right."
"What can I do to help you?" Matthew asked with a small yawn
This time it was Dominic's turn to smile.
"You, help with my cooking? Matthew, you cooking dinner is calling the Chinese take-out down the street. Go back to bed."
Matthew walked toward the sink, and began to wash his hands. When he was done, he grabbed the cupcake apron that hung on the wall, and tied it around his waist, hands on his hips, awaiting instructions.
"What's the matter with the filling you made there?" Matthew asked, pointing to the silver bowl on the counter.
Dominic stuck his finger into the bowl with a grimace, and held it out to the brunet with a scared look on his face.
"You tell me."
Matthew leaned forward, and let Dominic's finger slip into his mouth, tasting the white cream, letting his tongue flick against the blonds finger, simply for good measure. When Dominic's finger left Matthew's mouth with a pop, the brunets face twisted into a disgusted grimace.
"Yeah, that doesn't taste good. So, let's try again." Matthew said simply
Dominic sighed, and leaned forward, resting his hand on the counter, lowering his head with a sigh.
"I can't do this again. I'll go into school early tomorrow, and try there. Thanks for offering to help though. Maybe desserts just aren’t my thing."
Matthew's placed his hands on Dominic's shoulders, and began to massage the tense muscles there.
"Of course they are. I wouldn't have picked up my life and moved to New York with you if I didn't believe in you. And I believe that you can do this. So, let's try again."
Dominic breathed a deep sigh, and turned to face Matthew, leaning his back against the small counter, and pulling the other man into his chest.
"And I love you for doing that, and putting up with me when it's three in the morning and I can't make a cannoli. Go wash your hands, let's try again. I'll get the flour."
"Yes chef." Matthew said with a smile as he turned to wash his hands
Dominic was sure that it took him twice as long to make the cannoli filling with Matthew in the kitchen as it did him making it by himself. Dominic had to admit however, that it was the most fun he had had cooking anything in the kitchen in a very long time. Matthew insisted on tasting everything he could, but it didn't make Dominic too upset, because the sight of Matthew's tongue flicking, and licking every spoon and spatula, made Dominic want to cook that much more, only so he could see the brunet do it again.
It was when the sun began to rise outside the small living room window, that Dominic decided he was finally happy with the cannoli filling. Upon his taste test, Matthew had approved, much to Dominic's delight, and so it was, with only two hours before Dominic had to be at school, that he decided to finish the cannoli, and finish one of the desserts that he was truly proud of.
Dominic grabbed the cannoli shell that he had set out on the counter to warm up slightly, and carefully began to spoon the sweet filling into the shell, working quickly, but as carefully as he could. Once the cannoli shell had been filled, Dominic grabbed the sifter, to carefully dust the top of the cannoli with powdered sugar. The blond turned, and grabbed a plate from the cabinet behind him, carefully placed the cannoli on the plate, and presented it to Matthew with a proud smile.
"Well, tell me what you think?" Dominic asked eagerly
Matthew took the plate from Dominic, and sunk to the kitchen floor, pulling the blond down with him. The two men rested their backs against the cabinets, and wrapped their legs in the others. Matthew carefully lifted the cannoli from the plate, and slipped it into his mouth, taking a careful bite. The brunet closed his eyes, and chewed thoughtfully before turning to the blond and pressing his lips against Dominic's in a sweet kiss.
"Delicious. I knew you could do it."
Dominic pressed one more kiss to Matthew's lips, licking off the stray cannoli filling that lingered on Matthew's face.
"I couldn't have done it without you; any of this. Thanks for believing in me." Dominic smiled sincerely
Matthew took one more bite of cannoli, and pressed a kiss to Dominic's forehead.
"I couldn't let you do this alone, and I'm going to be there, every step of the way. You get ready for class, it's my turn to do the dishes anyway."
Dominic's face broke out into a huge smile, and he stood from the kitchen floor, dusting the flour and powdered sugar from his shirt.
"I'll take that deal any day!" Dominic smiled, pressing one last kiss to Matthew's lips before dashing down the hallway toward the bathroom
Matthew chuckled as he began to pile the dishes the two had dirtied into the sink. As he turned on the water to begin washing, he felt hands slip around his waist, and a warm kiss press against his neck.
"Thank you. " Dominic whispered
Matthew closed his eyes and reveled in the feeling of the blond being so close to him, and breathed a deep sigh.
"I'm always going to be here for you chef Dominic. Now, hurry up or you'll be late to class. And if you want to borrow my cupcake apron, you know where to look! "
