I cancelled the appt for Friday, because the internet was back up. Of course 2 hours later it went down again. Headed over to the local Comcast office and told them what was happening. They said it sounded like it might be the router, because the tech’s said they have lots of problems with the Linksys routers. Hmm, ok. We scheduled another appointment for Sunday and she told me to keep it, even if it comes back up, because it might be out cable line that’s having problems too.
Friday night I went and picked up a NetGear router, hooked it up, and we had no problems what so ever. So it looked like it was the router after all.
Comcast showed up yesterday, tested the line at the box and it was fine. Came upstairs, tested it through the modem, and it was horrible. They use a scale of +5 to -5, and they try to get the signal as close to zero as possible. Our reading was -4.9. I looked back at the paperwork from when they installed the service, and the reading was -3.9. wtf. So the guy said he was going to run a new line, which should do the trick. I didn’t tell him about the router issue, because we really did need a new line. The line was wrapped around the house instead of coming up directly from the box which was below the window. VERY screwy when it was initially installed many years ago. After that was finished, he tested the speed again, and we were up to -1.1. yay!
So it looks like it was a combination of the router and the line failing. The last 24 hours have been nice, with no interruptions in service. I’ll prolly end up keeping them now, only because at this point it’s cheaper and a faster speed than DSL.
Of course that might change next week.
