Ready for more TV/movie remakes? How about Battlestar Galactica and Princess Bride?!

First, a remake of The Princess Bride is not confirmed. Sony CEO was quoted as saying that "people were interested" in remaking it. The howl of outrage on Twitter and across the internet was inconceivable. And I think if the original author, William Goldman, were still alive we'd be hearing even more ( Read more... )

The problem is that the studios have figured out that if they remake a classic, they'll at least - usually - make back their costs and turn some profit. If they take a chance on an original property that isn't a NYT Best Seller book, then they might not make a profit. And Wall Street has conditioned corporations that stockholders MUST get dividends - stocks are no longer speculative investments, which is W R O N G.

Concerning Battlestar Galactica, who in their right or left mind would want to do a second remake? Lorne Greene passed away after the first series, and the guy who portrayed the first incarnation of Apollo passed away late last year or earlier this year (he was the only actor who was in both incarnations of Battlester Galactica iirc.)

Concerning The Princess Bride, the less said about that, the better!

Whatever happened to merely taking snippets of ideas and creating new "universes"? Has creativity gone down the toilet?

Hollywood is so risk-averse that yeah, pretty much that.

While I personally enjoy movies like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the best movies that I've seen this year - they weren't made this year - were German. Run, Lola, Run and Wings of Desire. Phantom Thread rates up there, too.

Hollywood has become wedded to the concept that all movies must make a bazillion dollars, and as they are companies, the fact that they have to be profitable is inescapable. But they're no longer willing to take risks and make films that won't be as profitable. I cannot see Hollywood trying to make something like Run, Lola, Run, and the less said about City of Angels the better.

I loved watching Battlestar Galactica, but you needed to keep watching. Yes.

When the re-launch of BSG happened, 2003-2009, we didn't have a DVR and it just wasn't convenient for us to watch a TV show in a fixed slot because Russet's work schedule was so variable. So we just couldn't keep up. We got a DVR shortly after it ended or perhaps during its final seasons, but at that point we were so far behind it just wasn't worth trying to catch up.

We might, some day, try to watch the whole thing. I'm sure someone is streaming it. We get HBO, Netflix, and Amazon Prime: between them, someone should have it.
