Well, I must be more burned out by the end of term than I thought because I haven't been able to write anything. All I've wanted to do is play ME2, watch Supernatural and read manga. Oh yes, and watch the Glee finale and get sniffly because I am a big sap. In which capacity I have been performing admirably, but really this needs to stop. So I've tried to kick start my writing with this meme.
1. Put on your music program on shuffle/random and start playing songs.
2. For each song, write something inspired by it. You only have the song length. No pre-planning and no writing after the song is over. No skipping songs!
3. Do 14 songs and post. Make sure to include the song name/artist.
Reading these back, I seem to have been a bit preoccupied with death and serious business like that. So, um, sorry if these seem a bit samey. I hope the variety of fandoms at least makes them kind of different (and now I need to go and worry about my mental state).
1. Down In New Orleans (Doctor John)- Hetalia/The Princess And the Frog
The 1920s are a good time to be alive, America decides. Especially in New Orleans. The whole city seemed to sing, some days; songs about magic and heartbreak and just having a good time. And yeah, it was nasty and seedy in places, but where wasn't? It made everything feel more real. More alive. Anyway, wasn't he supposed to be meeting someone? Ah, there she was.
"Maldonia! Ready for the wedding?"
2. Monster Hospital (Metric)- Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name
The surgery doesn't smell like any other surgery that Conrad has ever been in. There's the tang of cleaning chemicals but it also stinks of secondhand smoke and some other odours that he can't identify and doesn't want to. The worst of it is that some of those smells make him hungry and he sure as hell doesn't want to think about that. That's one of the reasons why he's always so on edge there. There's two others. One is the circumstances that usually lead to them visiting it (and how much more can Hanna go through before... before he's alone in this stupid mess?) and the third is Doc Worth himself.
3. Nobody's Fault But Mine (Beth Rowley)- Doctor Who
He thinks about them often, his companions. The list of names has gotten so long, but it's lodged in there somewhere between Carrionites and Daleks in the complex internal filing system that passes for a brain. Perhaps one of the reasons he changes his TARDIS so much is because the memories get too painful. Certainly, thinking about them too much invites certain questions. Like what would have happened if some had stayed, or left earlier, or lived, or died. But the one thing he won't think, because that really is too painful, is this: what would have happened if he hadn't met them? Because that answer is always the same.
4. Paparazzi (Lady Gaga)- Hetalia
Lithuania squirms nervously on the hard wooden bench. She's late. She's always late. He doesn't even know why he keeps doing this, except he does, really. Maybe if he can get her to like him (or at least not break his fingers this time) maybe he won't be a total failure. Poland makes fun of him for this in that edgy way that shows he's actually really annoyed, but this is one of the things that Feliks can't make him feel guilty about. You can't help who you fall in love with.
5. One More Time With Feeling (Regina Spektor)- Hetalia
There's one question that Germany very pointedly never asks Prussia. As far as he knows, Prussia is the only country who can't be killed. Why this is, he has no idea. Maybe that whole Teutonic Knight thing had some truth to it after all. But Germany has never asked him was death is like. Prussia's quite relieved about this, because the truth is he doesn't know. He has memories of blackness, but it's more like going to sleep. The coming back is worse, because that hurts. Injuries don't go away because you come back to life. But as long as he can, he'll keep coming back. Because even though he doesn't remember death, every time there is one time too many.
6. The Lonesome Valley (The Fairfield Four)- Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name
Hanna's a heavy sleeper. When he's sure he's settled, Zombie slips off to the street to take his nightly walk. This is another thing that has been affected by his new association with the paranormal investigator. He used to walk for days. Walking's good, it makes you think. Shakes the dust loose. Sometimes, in the early days, it was all he could do. The sound of his own feet filled up his mind until there was nothing left. Maybe one night he'll stay, but the hours are still too long to sit alone in the dark. It's uncomfortably like death. So Zombie still walks, and his feet take him into the dawn.
7. Something Missing (MiChi)- Doctor Who
Donna's never been under any illusion that she's special. Oh sure, her grandpa told her that she was unique, but every kid gets told that. And even though she is a very good temp, she knows there's others that are better (and if she was really special, Donna figures that she's be a celebrity or something, right?). But there's still this feeling she sometimes gets when she sees the news and something weird's happened again, or when she looks up at the stars from Wilf's allotment (he doesn't like her doing that any more though) that there's a place where she's terribly, vitally important. She doesn't tell anyone. Everyone gets those feelings, right?
8. Poker Face (Lady Gaga)- Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name
Casimiro is an awful poker player. He cheats constantly and can't bluff worth a damn. Even Conrad wised up after being shaken down a couple of times. Still, he likes to think that he's good and he really, really likes to win.
Finas sighs and deals out the cards for a fifth time.
"Losing a lot of money, Finas." Casimiro smirks, picking up his hand and immediately grinning, his one white eye lighting up.
"You are just too good for me." Finas replies, deadpan, and gets ready to lose another round.
9. How To Save A Life (The Fray)- Avartalia
Approaching Lee is hard. The war has lent him a terror that he didn't used to have. Even though the other Nations know that the rot that set in wasn't his fault, he still did terrible things. The Earth Kingdom, who still bears the scars of occupation on his back, wants nothing to do with him. Even diplomatic Kesuk is privately of the opinion that the Fire Nation is beyond words. They all know what Tseten would have wanted. As usual, it falls to Ahna to be brave.
The palace is too big, and it takes a long time to find him. Her hand on his shoulder makes him jump and flinch. She wonders when the last time was that someone didn't touch him in anger.
10. Dance in the Dark (Lady Gaga)- Hetalia
Skirts whirl, hands clap. Hungary's foot stamps, a clean, staccato rhythm before she whips around and marches the length of the hall. Her hair flies behind her like a banner, the flowers that she put behind her ear bobbing jauntily with her movements. There's no music. She doesn't need any. She spins, once, twice, three times, until she stops, suddenly dizzy and self-conscious, in front of her husband.
"The hallway still needs cleaning, Elizaveta."
11. Necessary Evil (Edgar 'Jones' Jones)- Supernatural part a
An interesting thought. Does hunting balance the books, so to speak? Sam thinks about this, and he knows Dean does too. He wonders if his father thought the same way. Maybe when they both finally and eventually die for good all that they've done will be taken into account. Well, all the good they've done. Everything he knows about religion tells him that this isn't how it works, but then, everything he thought about the world has been proved wrong too many times to count by now. So maybe it's in his nature to bargain and hope.
12. Do Me A Favour (Arctic Monkeys)- Supernatural part b
And then there's the moments when they drop off the woman (it's always a woman) back to her normal life and drive off. And Dean puts in some music and they don't talk for a while because they're both thinking. Maybe about staying, maybe about how good it is to leave. But they can't help it, either of them, they can't help leaving because staying has always proven to be so much worse.
13. Alejandro (Lady Gaga)- Hetalia
England takes in the black cloak, big hat, big hat, mask and sword and raises an eyebrow. America has even tried (unsuccessfully) to grow a moustache to complete the look.
"And this nonsense is…?"
America slashes the sword through the air dangerously close to England's torso. If the sword had been real, his pullover would be bearing a 'Z' mark across the front.
"I'm Zorro!"
"Of course you are." England sighs. "And Zorro is aware that Halloween is next week?"
14. Playing With The Big Boys (Prince of Egypt Soundtrack)- Hetalia
Rome's never seen anyone quite like Egypt before. She's ancient and beautiful, old even when he was young. Her eyes flash in their dark lining of makeup, and she pushes her son behind her.
"Leave." The command has the weight of centuries behind it.
"Oh no." Rome takes in the palace, the gold and the treasure. Egypt herself, in all her beauty. "I think I'll stay."
