Today I went to the V&A again and while I was there I bought a book on the international history of costume. Yes, this was mainly for historical Hetalia costumey lulz.
First, here's The Mamas (whom I love and would dearly love to see in Hetalia proper). That thing in Mama Greece's hand is supposed to be a sheaf of olive branches. I know.
Medieval!genderbent!England is a bit of a niche market, but the headdress just reminded me so much of regular!fem!England's pigtails. The sleeves were a failed attempt at working in a 'Three Lions' motif.
People who leave out The Eyebrows when they gender-bend England make me weep.
And now my personal favourite:
On the left: 1640s England. On the right: 1640s France. Oh Francis, you pimp.
(this picture will never be coloured. Look at all that lace D:)
Oh yes, I know that the hairstyles aren't period-accurate but trust me, nobody wants to see cavalier!moustache France. Or for that matter, long-hair England. (And in my headcanon, England is actually incapable of growing proper facial hair- it's all blonde, the facial-hair mojo being taken by his eyebrows. He passed this on to America- which annoys Al no end, as Canada is able to grow a full face of Francis-style stubble just by concentrating)
