That's kind of what the weather feels like right now, but also as the icon is, it's kind of pretty.
Yesterday turned out to be a pretty darn good day! I found out on Friday that the local browncoats were having a movie shindig on Saturday night, so I emailed and asked if I could join them. Then I had a walk round the harbour front near the hostel, a nice little wonder about before meeting them at the cinema. There ended up being quite a few people, we took up about 2 rows in the theatre once we all arrived and saw the film.
I've seen Children of Men twice now, and I think it rates as one of my favourite films. I don't know when it's owt the UK as I think it's only on limited release here at the moment, but it is a great film. Most of it seems to be handheld camera work which I found really makes you feel like you're in the story as it's happening. There are quite a lot of what seems to be very long single take scenes, one round and inside a car which i can't work out how they did it.
The car is full of people and moving and then stepping outside the car and changing which POV you're looking through, it's an amazing sequence and the film is full of them. Clive Owen is also wonderful, very much not being an action hero, just an ordinary guy which is constantly reaffirmed throughout the story. It's sad, funny, harsh, frightening, upsetting and hopeful.
It's also very English, which is interesting to watch in another country, there's a bit at the beginning, newsreaders and clips and comments about how the rest of the world has given up except for England. It kind of gets a chuckle and with the other browncoats a few amused glances. It does sound so pretensious when you're probably the only English person in the theatre at the time. Also, funnyest moment was during the previews and it's some kind of werewolf film, from the makers of Underworld and looks like a teen flick with some supernatural tacked on, then comes the title of the film, in the big serious film announer voice, dah, dah, DAH BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE.
The whole cinema burst out laughing, it's the most stupid title ever and completely not to do with a werewolf film, the blood maybe, but chocolate? Especially after the trailer makes it look like it was taking itself seriously. Ha!
So, back to the shindig, one of the ladies there asked me how old I was, so I said I was actually 24 that day and then everyone sang Happy Birthday to me. Then after the film, when we all got coffee and sat down for a chat, there must have been about 20 or more people there by that point, all sang happy birthday to me again. I think I went quite red, but it was very sweet. Serena gave me this very cute little canadian flag pin too.
Then I was talking to the people at my end of the table and getting to know them too. Without fail I have found Browncoats to be the most welcoming, kindest and most wonderful of people. It's a passport of trust and friendship that gets extended out without question. I think that's what makes me love the show so much, as it's not so much just about the show itself, but this whole world of friends and connections and opportunities that has grown because of it. A wonderful community of people have come together from all places and lifestyles, it's a true pleasure to be a part of it.
So one lady offered to take me up Seymore Mountain and catch the view. She wants to take her kids up there at some point and I'm more than welcome to come along. Another lady, Rena has also offered to let me stay in her spare room while I'm here. I've only been here maybe 2 days now, and already it's been pretty great. Now all I need is my money back from Flan, enough to get to New Zealand and on the Browncoat cruise and a job in the film/tv industry and it's pretty much perfect.
Also congrats to Gina Torres on expecting her first baby!
