I've been sitting here paying bills all morning. It's so much fun and so grown-up of me, sipping coffee and siphoning my meager earnings out to companies so that I can live.
I'm on high alert - Ryan's friend Zach got his email from Spoleto about 20 minutes ago. So I guess that means I'll be checking my email obsessively until I leave here to go practice. Today is the string concerto competition. I am really hoping a violist gets to the finals - they all sound amazing and they all deserve to win. We have a studio party tonight at Mr. Dunham's house. I'm excited! I love his cats and it will be nice to chill with the other violists in a non-musical setting. I hope he orders pizza. I haven't had pizza in a long time and I am really craving it for some reason.
Last night I went across the street to a little barbecue. It was at the apartment of Emanuelle, the cellist of the quartet that is in residence at Rice for the Quartet Studies Master's Program or whatever it is. She's from Quebec. The three French-Canadian members of my Trout Quintet were there, plus the sister of the pianist in my group. Plus one of the conducting students, Daniel, who also hails from Quebec. Emanuelle's boyfriend's name is Alejandro, and he is from Mexico. Marie-Michele's boyfriend didn't speak at all so I don't know his name or if he even speaks English. Add to that mix Scott the White North-American bass player, Kristi the Swedish-Korean violinist, and me. Kristi left after about 30 minutes because she had to go catch an early flight and Scott left about 30 minutes after that and then it was just me. And once the wine got flowing, so did the French. I heard "Harry Potter" a few times, and picked up a few other things, but we contented ourselves with taking goofy pictures on a digital camera and laughing at Daniel, who was being very silly.
After that, Scott called me and he and Ted picked me up and we joined yet even more music people at Ernie's on Banks. I had heard of this bar, but I didn't know that "on Banks" was part of the title, I just thought people were referring to the street it was on. It was indeed on Banks, and very smoky, and I had a very tasty Amaretto Sour.
Even though I had a lot of sleep I still feel tired. I have been going to bed at a reasonable time all week, so 2 am was kind of a shock to my system.
I am going to go freshen up and then go to school to practice. Have a good Saturday!
