Savior of the Damned

Sharing earbuds with someone while walking to class and trying to dodge people is quite a feat. And Cameron has good taste in music.

On my way to History, I saw my freshman RA Nathan wearing a shirt that said "I need a hug". So I walk over, thinking maybe he's having a bad day and wanted to do something clever to cheer himself and other people up. I hug him, and then as I'm pulling away he says "I'm HIV positive."

And there was an odd 2 second period where I wasn't sure what was going on. I actually thought he was serious and I was worried for the guy. But then my brain came back to me and I realized obviously it's some sort of protest or demonstration to raise awareness. Those 2 seconds of 'What?' were just really interesting.

My English professor brought up a really interesting point in class today. We didn't come to college to demonstrate what we already know. We came here to think outside the box and learn things that are completely new and challenging to us. I think this can be a hard concept for an English class. A lot of people think that once they hit 9th grade or so, they know everything there is to know about English. You've learned spelling, grammar, and punctuation. You've read Huckleberry Finn. Congratulations, you have learned everything there is to know about English. I understand why some people think that. When you're learning Math there's a constant progression. You learn basic math, then you learn Algebra, then you learn Trigonometry, then you learn Calculus, and so on and so forth. There are a lot of subjects out there that are very linear and progressional. But English isn't like that. You can't think of English as a linear progression. If you do, you'll get stuck in a rut and you won't be able to learn new things. Every time you read something, even if you've read it before, there is a possibility for growth and interpretation and emotional connection. You just need to keep an open mind.

And now I'm rambling.

It's one of those awesome videos that you can just watch and enjoy and not get much out of it, because on some level it is just a simple performance video. But if you're looking for it, you can get so many deep meanings out of it. Where is this abstract setting it takes place in and what does it mean? Why are they dressed the way they are? What does Starved to death in the land of plenty mean? Why is there snow coming down at the beginning and black confetti at the end? All questions that make me stop and think, without detracting from watching the pretty musicians.

I made a bunch of icons from this music video yesterday. I'll probably post them today or tomorrow. velvetsun_icons.
