Shinichi had quickly and capably built a small fire near his own wagon. That much he found simple. The question of how to cook the food he had purchased for the trip was another matter altogether. He stares at the small pot and the stew ingredients with a perplexed expression. Now how had Ran always started this?

Nepeta noticed his discomfort with his food preparation and, while she was not very well-versed in cooking herself, she could not pass up the opportunity -- or oppurrtunity -- to assist! She wanders up to Shinichi with a curious and eager expression, leaning over him and his small pot.

"What are you doing?" she asks, eyes wide with interest.

He glances over at her with a faint smile. "Cooking, hopefully. The available supplies seemed rather low in ready-made food."

The concept of ready-made food is not one that Nepeta is familiar with, but she nods in agreement regardless. Then she's looking even more curious, settling back on her heels and crossing her arms over her chest.

"You are not just going to hunt beasts?" she asks, her tone suggesting such a thing is completely normal.

"Only when it becomes necessary." On the advice of the shopkeeper he'd acquired some hunting weaponry, but he had no intention of using it until he'd had the time to become acquainted with its operation. With a pistol he had near perfect accuracy, but he knew better than to assume that a rifle would be the same.

"Right now, there are still some fresh supplies that should be used up first."

Nepeta made a sound of eager curiosity, before she was circling his work and watching him watch the pot. "What are you going to cook in that pot if there's not beasts?" she asked. Clearly, this was a very important ingredient that was missing here.

"I have vegetables and some dried meat," he answers calmly.

"Oh..." she says, before she's pausing, unsure if that's an acceptable reply. She's not familiar with the food, but she doesn't say as much just yet. She's smiling as though it is impossible not to. "As long as there is some meat!"

"The meat is necessary to add protein to our diet in this situation, seeing as how there were no vegetable or fish proteins available." Shinichi says this aloud without thinking much about it. It was only common knowledge, after all.

If Shinichi bothered to listen, he would probably hear a knife being taken to a chopping block at a nearby wagon. It was somewhat sitting further from the others, a hunched individual wearing a beanie sitting before their own fire. A pot was sitting on the fire; something was simmering inside.

Shinichi was always listening. After a time, he puts away his supplies and gets up to find the source of the sound.

While stew was good and filling, the annoying downside about it was that it ate up supplies quickly. That, and it would get repetitive (though Akihiko would like it). Shinjiro finished chopping the last potato and removed the lid, sliding the pieces into the pot. Stirring for a while, he stopped to check the fire. It was low enough... the lid went back on and he proceeded to wait again.

Shinichi stands outside the circle of firelight for a moment as he observes this, then coughs lightly and steps into the light.

"Excuse me, could I ask for your assistance with something?"

"Hm?"

Shinjiro glances back, staring at Shinichi. What did this kid want?

He rubs the back of his head sheepishly.

"I'm afraid cooking is a skill I've never mastered. I was wondering if I could get some advice on how to start."

"... What're you trying to make?"

He turned his attention back to the pot still simmering over the fire. He'd give it another minute or two.
