Mulder’s limp has not been improving with the antibiotics. He has simply gotten better at limping. Last night when I got home from work, I saw that he had licked all the fur off his front leg and the wound had become abscessed. I called his vet immediately, knowing that they had just closed, and left a message. Having dealt with an abscess a few years ago, I knew it had to be treated, but it did not warrant taking him to the 24 hour emergency vet.
Today, I was allowed to leave work for a few hours to take Mulder to the vet. One of the assistants commented that she knew his wound was going to become abscessed last week, but had to go along with the doctor’s treatment recommendation. She said that the doctor should have had him wearing one of those cone collars all week so he wouldn’t lick the wound. Cats saliva is filled with bacteria. While the doctor was examining him (a different doctor from last week), a chunk of pus came out and landed on the table. To everyone’s surprise, he was no longer running a high fever.
The doctor flushed out the wound. I’m told a lot of pus came out. Mulder was given a shot and sent home with antibiotics. He is wearing a cone collar so he won’t lick it. He is going back in on Monday. If it is not clearly healing on Monday, they want to do a minor surgery. I am not allowed to feed him after midnight on Sunday, incase they opt to operate on Monday morning. Because he is an older cat, they will also need to run several tests before they can put him under anesthesia.
For obvious financial reasons, I really hope Mulder does not need surgery on Monday. The vet does not do ANY kind of payment plans. I will need to pay for the surgery in full at the time of service. Ick. But, what can I do? Its part of the responsibility of having a pet.
