I disagree. . .here's why:dougalofthewindJune 19 2009, 04:29:18 UTC
I don't know if this isn't just EA injuring the Nintendo franchise. Reggie stated third parties refused to make most anything other than party games for the wii, and third parties have tended to make two types of games. They will make a game that sells to XBOX and Playstation 3, and then they will construct a Playstation 2 version, so as to fit on PS2, and then, so they don't have to make a completely third version, they add motion controls to the PS2 version for the wii, so they don't spend as much catering to the wii. Ghostbusters broke away from this, having a completely different company make their wii version. Also note, No More Heroes 1, No More Heroes 2, House of the Dead Overkill (SEE THE ENDING. IT'S MORE ADULT THAN ANYTHING EVER, and it recently made the guinness world records for game with most f bombs - AND it is a wii sclusive), and Manhunt 2 (which nearly blew it for being too agressively adult). These are just examples of a constantly growing adult library on wii. Some third parties are hooking wii up, but many are purposefully making the quick buck on party games and shutting the wii down on its full potential. When Nintendo actually comes out and says the equivalent of, "What the hell are you doing third parties, why screw us over?" there is a problem, and Reggie did just that. It's easy to make a game for many platforms. It's hard to make a game for just one with a totally different control scheme. The games are being produced to hit the perceived widest range. However, the way things are playing out between Nintendo and other systems, as Travis Touchdown puts it in his upcoming sequel, "This is no longer a battle, it's a mother fucking war."
If Nintendo's to stay in this, they're going to need a lot more third party support. The Conduit, No More Heroes 2, Red Steel 2, and the Grinder probably won't be enough. And even though a new Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Galaxy 2 is coming out, it's not enough to sell Nintendo. They need something huge, and soon, because their true potential is being wasted by most. What I DON'T agree with is a different bad choice by Nintendo. When Nintendo sued Nyko for their creation of the wireless nunchuck, it was a horrible day in Wii history. We need to have controls that offer us freedom to move, given the fact that they are controls based around movement. It was a douchebag move on Nintendo's part in trying to maintain too much control.
The EA developer lead told me that Nintendo told them they didn't want EA putting the newest football games on Wii unless EA strips enough features to make the games family friendly. This wasn't EA saying "Screw you Ninty". This was Ninty saying "We don't want your games on Wii if they're not geared toward the kids." I understand most other third parties have been douchebags. However, it makes me wonder how many of them Nintendo told to take a hike if they weren't gonna make simple games. Nintendo is very much at least partly to blame for this. This is why NCAA 09 on Wii only had two game modes. Because Nintendo said strip it down or forget it. Who knows what else has been going on between Ninty and other third parties.
I dunno. I guess unlike most I have a hard time defending Nintendo anymore when a lead developer tells me Nintendo told them to make it kiddy or take a hike.
