MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS/OBSERVATIONS notyourlight October 23 2011, 03:00:44 UTC

Far enough. Luke sat, pulled his knees up to his chest, and gasped for breath. He hadn't gone that far - enough so people wouldn't look at him - and he hadn't really run, but he felt strange, overwarm, a little queasy, and his heart was pounding in his ears. Part of him wondered if the incredibly high humidity here was making him sick.

He was upset in that tight roiling way that told him that if he didn't do something he'd burst into tears, which was exactly what he didn't want to do. His vision was already blurring. So he did what he tried never to do, what he always deflected or turned into sighs or just sublimated.

He got very, very angry.

It was a tight anger, messy and wet, not the kind that wrecking something would help with, and anyway something in Luke hated the thought of doing that, but he had to do something, he had to demonstrate that this was not okay ( ... )

[It's afterwards that Jacen sees this, and he sighs. He hadn't expected Anakin to say that, but perhaps it was best now that it was out there. He recorded a holo in response, when he could get on his own for a moment]

I'm sorry, Luke. You have to know we had our reasons.

[Time has passed, and Luke's calmer now, but he's still very not happy.]

Sure you did.

Would you even have believed us?

[His hands tighten into fists.] Does it matter? You could have told me. You should have told me.

It does matter. Knowing too much about one's future can put an undue amount of pressure on one in the present. If you knew how we looked at your future self, you would start to think we expected those things of you at your age. And despite you sharing his name and history, you aren't the same man. We don't expect you to be, and you can't expect as much from yourself at this point, either.

That's not what I'm talking about, and you know it! You're just clouding the whole thing!

Do you even understand why I don't like this? I don't care what you know. [He does, but he also does know it's better to be kept in the dark.] I care that you can't take five minutes beforehand to say "Gee, Luke, there's something we want to say at the convocation that's kind of important for you, I'm going to tell it now while we're alone".

Personally, I wasn't aware that was how Anakin intended to address it. Perhaps he couldn't find a way to tell you one on one that would really capture the weight of what he was talking about.

He still could have said something! Even if I didn't believe it, it's better than just springing it on me in front of a crowd! Why not tell me first? So what if I'm nothing right now, that's basic consideration!

And don't go pretending he could've forgot I was there. I helped land the ship.

Unfortunately, you can't change what he's done now. All you can do is come to terms with this information in a way that won't alter your current course from what you want it to be.

[He exhales heavily in the melodramatic teenager version of a calming breath exercise he uses when much older, and rubs his hand once, slowly, from his forehead to his chin. He seems more composed, now, but there's still hurt in his eyes.]

I know. That doesn't mean I'm not upset with him. And don't you tell me not to be. I'll feel how I like.

My 'course' was that I was going to end up a pilot, maybe for survey missions. That's a little incompatible, don't you think?

You said 'was'. I'd say that was already thrown off by your arrival here, wouldn't you?

People go back all the time. And even if I didn't, I'd have been barely less qualified for it here than there. No I.D., but no trying to talk my aunt and uncle around either, and either way there's years in the way.

And back home you won't remember this, so it won't be able to affect your plans.

I imagine you might have some questions.

You're sure that's how it works, right? None of this counts anymore?

'Course I have questions. But I don't know if I'd want the answers.
