Severus swallowed. The motion felt parchment dry and uncomfortable, and he closed his eyes and attempted again with clear signs of discomfort. For the past few days, sleep had eluded the former Potions Master as he pressed forward- determined to find a solution.
He breathed in, his inhalation sounding like bones rattling, "The bacta samples. Replace the-" another labored breath, this one causing an obvious exertion as Snape closed his eyes and took a moment before continuing. "-kolto in the med packs with it and see if there is improvement."
Lily noticed the look on her friend's face, and frowned. "You need to keep your fluids up, Severus." Her voice was disapproving, worried. "And sleep, preferably. You can't fight this if you're exhausted."
Nonetheless, she did as he instructed, working with care so as to avoid any mistakes. That done, she held up two of his options. "Which would you rather, the hypo or the stim shot?"
She sucked in a breath, turning her head away for a moment so he couldn't see the look of distress his words had caused her. "Don't talk like that."
Slowly exhaling, she placed the hypo back on the table and carefully moved around it to his side. "You should count yourself lucky, you know," she remarked conversationally as she injected him. "Everyone else I've ever done this to just gets stabbed in the leg."
Had he the strength left to raise a brow, Severus would have surely done so. As it was he simply raised a feeble hand, tugging at the edge of his collar and exposing his jugular.
"Yes, this is truly the optimal situation to find myself in," he whispered, dark eyes sliding to meet her green stare before she plunged the stim.
She held his gaze as the stim went in, before looking down to pull it out again. She opened her mouth to make another joke, perhaps, say anything to lighten the situation, but what came out instead was faintly choked, obviously upset. "Stop it." She set the stim aside. "I'm not going to let you die."

He attempts a swallow again, his inhale thick and weak.
"The stim. I have attempted tests with the hypo already."
