Characters: Beat, anyone else that shows up Content: Beat trys to keep himself busy during overnight lookout Setting: Deck of the 4423, Trewe Time: Late night, first day in Trewe Warnings: Beat trying to sing
Unlike Reno, Beat managed to notice Penelo before she scared him to death. He stopped mid strum, putting the guitar on his knee. He hadn't started up on the singing again yet at least.
“Hey! Penelo, right?” He called waving her over. “Come on! Have'a seat, yo. More the merrier!” He gestured to Mao, trying to make sure she noticed him as well. “This is Mao, our new Boatswain, jus' in case ya haven't met yet.
Mao had gotten himself comfortable next to Beat by this point, laying on his stomach with his paws tucked under him. His tail had been flicking back and forth along with the strumming while it lasted, but as soon as Beat stopped, he looked up.
Penelo? Ah, that's right. "I recall her post on the network. Nice to meet you."
Penelo smiled at Mao. Talking cat. No weirder than a giant lizard demihuman, right? "Yeah, I'm Penelo. And you're....Beat, right?" she asked, looking at Beat. "Have you seen Vaan?"
So far the new members of the crew were doing much better at receiving him than past recruits had. Mao found this rather interesting, and wondered if kids these days just weren't surprised by anything anymore.
... Then he remembered Vaan and Beat, and he changed his mind.
"I talked to him earlier," Mao considered, shifting to rest on his side now. "But I've yet to actually meet him."
"Just look for the trail of broken pottery and wild ideas," Penelo quipped. "Drat. He told me to meet him somewhere, but I haven't had time to find all the places yet."
It was at this moment that the sound of footsteps preceded Vaan's own appearance on the deck. The blond teen seemed to be on some sort of mission as he spoke before really looking around himself. "Hey, have you guys seen--"
Blinking, Vaan's face relaxed a bit as he saw Penelo. "Oh, err--nevermind."
Beat smirked, then reached down and 'elbowed' Mao with his wrist. "Maybe we sound...hehe... leave these two alone~" He cooed, flicking his eyes between Vaan and Penelo.
I mean, really. Why else would Vaan want to meet her on deck, late at night, alone.
Snorting at Beat, and flopping on his side a bit more with the nudge, Mao looked at him with amusement before looking up at Penelo and Vaan. He had to admit, meeting late at night, alone tended to give off the impression of secret rendezvous with, ah, interesting intentions.
He wasn't going to tease them too badly, though.
"That might be a good idea," he said, speaking up enough for all three of them to hear him. "But as an officer of the ship, I'm not sure I can condone such behavior out on the deck."
At the moment, Vaan seemed just as amused as Penelo. "C'mon guys, cut it out. . " he muttered, and nodded his head at Penelo's question.
And then he noticed. With the way the shadows fell over the deck, it was hard for his eyes to pick out Mao's dark outline until he was staring directly at the spot the cat was currently lying on. "Whoa. . .Mao? Is that you?"
Beat just chuckled, waggling his eyebrows at the two. Oh he knew they might of been telling the truth... but this was much more fun. He needed a little entertainment this late at night.
"A'ight... then ya won't mind if we stay down here, will ya?"
"Of course," Mao responded to Penelo and Vaan, amusement obvious in his voice until he stretched on his side and seemed to drop the subject completely. He'd done plenty of teasing with Reno earlier, he could take a break from it now.
Lilac eyes went from looking at Beat to Vaan, and soon after he flashed him a slight grin, tail curling close to him. Despite his feline features, he made the expression clearly human. "It is. Good evening, Vaan."
Eyes glancing towards Beat, Vaan shrugged, "Do whatever you want, I don't care."
Turning his attention back towards Mao, the gunner took a few steps closer and crouched down on his haunches, arms resting across his knees. "Wow. . " The look of awe on his face was distinctly pronounced as he reached out and touched the feline between the ears. "You really ARE a cat!"
Oh, good. The boy she'd healed earlier was on deck. Maybe he could help...

He waited for the freaking out to commence.

He remebered Vaan from the rescue party. The guy seemed a little dense, but an ok person. Hell, like Beat had any room to talk about dense.
