The edge of the island had nothing but sand that stretches on endlessly in either direction. After a few meters of sand, the landscape changes abruptly into a thick jungle ( Read more... )

He had heard stories that the island was infested with monsters. It looked more like a nice little vacation spot if the landing area was anything to judge by. Which it usually wasn't, but if things went well they probably wouldn't be running into any of them. Even if they did run into them, stock-grade monsters of the week wouldn't make a dent in the plans of a pirate lord.

Aizen, looked over the area, face drawn into a painting of content neutrality. He didn't expect to find anything of interest on their first try, and it seems that expectation has been filled. The ruins gave him a slight feeling of suspicion, seeing as they had not been mentioned before, and Aizen Sousuke did not like surprises.

Oh well, if it did turn out to be something important, it wasn't anything he couldn't handle. As long as there weren't any zombies. Zombies were so annoying to deal with.

"This is going to be fun!"

Said the girl who knew next to nothing about the dangers that really awaited her. Of course, Naminé was warned of the dangers, and she wasn't about to go running off into the unknown, but the chance to explore an island she had never been to was fun.

Naminé was not alone, of course: She had her gator egg with her (she had the feeling it was going to hatch soon, and Naminé didn't want Chomper McNibblets to be alone) and Nia, the strange girl she found in the cargo bay the other day. She just couldn't leave Nia behind, when the other girl didn't know anyone.

"Once my father gets here, we'll go off and scout the island," Naminé smiled at Nia as she told her this. "Our job is just to map the island. Don't worry, I'm very good at remembering things, so we won't get lost!"

If Naminé was excited about the treasure hunt, then Nia must've been ready to have a premature heart attack in comparison. Dawned with her new friend's garb, she obediently followed the blond off the ship and right onto the island, completely wide-eyed with her surroundings.

She'd never seen so many different things before! Was that... was that sand? Nia bent over, grabbing a fistful of the grainy ground and let it seep between her fingertips. It was hot and dry and it felt so nice even though it got underneath her nails. Nia wondered if her father had ever been to an island like this before, where he could walk on the sand and look at all the trees and other things that were scattered around them.

"Map? Lost?" Nia asked in that same quizzical tone, clapping her hands a little to dust off the sand before wandering over to Naminé.

Nia was so cute; Naminé simply couldn't lose patience with her (not that she was one to lose patience with anything). She could tell that her new friend obviously had a bit of a sheltered life. And certainly, she was a noble; nobles probably didn't get themselves involved in commoner things. So Nia's lack of knowledge with anything practical didn't faze her... too much.

"Oh, yes. Um, a map is like a picture that shows you where you are," Naminé explained, gesturing to the paper and pencils she had brought to draw said map. "I'm going to be drawing what I see as we go along, and that becomes a map. Other people can look at it and know where they're going again!"

Now, how to explain the concept of being lost...

"Um, being lost is very bad. It means you're in a place you never saw before and you don't know where you are. But we won't be lost," Naminé repeated her promise. "So don't worry about that, Nia!"

Nia was truly grateful that Naminé had the patience to explain to her everything that she didn't know. She felt in debt to her friend's kindness and knew that she had to return it all in full or else she'd never forgive herself. Yet the good thing about this was that she was trying, doing her best to connect all the pieces together so she'd have an easier time understanding all of these new things ( ... )
