If there were to be a time for mixed feelings, that time would be later. Zeetha had to make a first impression of complete resolve. In uniform, she felt the part. Even though it had been years since she had worn a formal uniform, the training of youth ran deep. She had been shocked at how easily she had been able to put it on, how little fear she felt. Somehow she felt less nervous than the day she had joined the Winding Way as a Boatswain.
I suppose these last two years have seasoned me, she thought. That was my first experience with command outside of my own people, and with children to boot. I had no idea how to motivate or discipline a people with such different social expectations. I was terribly afraid of failure, and I felt constrained by not being able to follow the ways I had been taught. It's difficult to know you will encounter situations which will require different actions than those you were trained for. But now I think I'm getting the hang of things. I understand that I'm going to fail sometimes, and that I won't be able to do everything perfectly. If I can accept that, then I think I can be okay. If I know that I can hold on and work through those times, I think I can keep a cool head.
There was no doubt in her mind it was going to be a difficult task. She expected the first few months to have a steep learning curve. However, she found herself looking forward to it. While she had been a Boatswain, she had often thought nostalgically about her time as traveling as an entertainer, how relaxing and stress free it had been. Yet once she tried to return to that life, she had found herself restless, looking back fondly on her time as a Boatswain. That had told her something important about herself, and left her feeling much less conflicted about taking this command. She supposed in time she would have adjusted to that as well, but without a doubt, this would be the better option for her.
She settled into a chair, waiting to see who would be dropping by. It was a task she felt eager to start.
