Chase had long since packed away all the equipment and cleaned up the blood so the room was neat and tidy. He was currently sitting by the table, pen in mouth while he worked on his crossword. Rustling sounds made him look up.

"So you're finally awake. How are you holding up?"

Ukitake gave the doctor a small wry smile, as he carefully shifted against the pillows to be sitting up a little higher. "Alive." His voice was still raspy from all the coughing, but there was a hint of amused irony in it.

Holy crap do you ever sleep? chasingwombats June 6 2010, 11:27:26 UTC
Joking was generally a good sign. Chase knew from reading his medical record that the other man had been hospitalised many times and it was heartening to see that he hadn't let it get to him. Placing his pen down he stood up and made his way over.

"Any pain? I could give you something stronger if you need it."

Yes XD Just not right now. wavesandthunder June 6 2010, 11:39:25 UTC
"Some," Ukitake replied ruefully. "I feel a bit like I've been kicked in the chest by a horse. I think I'd rather remain clear-headed for the moment, though." He knew he'd probably accept something stronger when he wanted to sleep again, but this soon after an attack, he preferred to remain in full control of his senses - the detached feeling the stronger medications gave him was almost as bad as not being able to breathe in the first place.

:O This will probably be my last tag for today if I want to have breakfast tomorrow :P chasingwombats June 6 2010, 11:51:38 UTC
Chase nodded. "Just tell me when you need it then." Indicating at the sword he said "Lieutenant Hijikata brought that in earlier. I assume it's yours?"

[ermm I'm allowed to assume that right? If not replace with random npc]

It's cool, I'm probably going to sleep soon. And yep, Rou left the sword there wavesandthunder June 6 2010, 12:02:25 UTC
Ukitake nodded. "Yes, it's mine. Would it be alright for it to remain here?" It was good of Rou to have left his sword here - by the time he had reached the infirmary he hadn't quite been in the right mindset to request it. Now that the spirits were satisfied he wasn't in any immediate danger of dying, though, it would be fine for it to be back in his quarters - though he preferred having their company and strength to draw on here.

While Chase knew nothing about the sword he could at least tell that it was very important to him. True, it was an unusual security blanket thing to want with him, Chase had seen stranger things before.

"Of course." Pausing slightly he added "If all goes well you should be free to go in a couple of days, but you'll have to take it easy for a while and that means no training. Doctor's orders." He hoped that this was one of those people who actually followed medical advice or at the very least wasn't someone who looked down on him because of his age.

Ukitake nodded assent to the young doctor's orders. He had expected as much, really - it was fairly standard instructions after one of his bad spells. Not being able to train he could handle - he had desk work, he had other things he could do on the ship. Being stuck in here for the next few days was the larger irritation. Oh, he understood the reasoning for it - and trying to do anything with the chest tube still in would be uncomfortable at best - but it was frustrating anyway. But throwing a tantrum about it wouldn't make things any better for anyone involved. He sighed slightly. "Would it be possible to send someone to my quarters for some books?"

No tantrums, demands, hissy fits, death threats or smart remarks. If only more people in the world were like this. "Anything in particular that you'd like?" There's nothing for him to do here so he might as well do this.

"There are some short novels on the middle shelf of my bookcase," Ukitake replied. His brow furrowed slightly as he mentally visualized the way he had things sorted on the bookcase. "Far left. A few of those should get me through the next few days."

"Okay then."

About 10 minutes later Chase was back with the books. Placing the books down beside the beddridden man he said "If you need anything else, just call. I'll be right over there"

Ukitake gave the doctor a warm smile. "Thank you - this will help a lot, I think." He knew the doctor didn't have to go out of his way to get those books for him, and the fact that he had anyway was heartening.
