It just so happened that Ness was the only doctor on duty at that particular time. He didn't exactly plan it this way, but it seemed that whatever forces that governed Reial wanted him to see his brother again. Which was all fine with him. He had a few choice words he wanted to tell Red. Namely, chew him out for disappearing for three years to go live on top of a mountain.

Sometimes Ness wondered what went on in Red's head. He knew his brother pretty well, but there was just some things he couldn't get.

He was a bit unprepared to see Red walk through the door - he didn't look much different from when Ness last saw him, but still, he must have changed somehow during the last three years.

"...hello, Red."

Joshua's interest was caught the moment he had caught the last name "Lakehaven" on the Network. Ness had mentioned a brother on very rare ocassions, and their little public exchange had only solidified his impression that there was some distance between the two. Joshua was interested in this Red, but after Rikku's replies to Red's post, Joshua wasn't sure if meeting Red alone was such a good idea.

Especially when he had been on a mountain for 3 years. Who even stays up a mountain for that long? Only people who were absolutely crazy about mountains, or people who used that time to sit under a waterfall to train, as far as Joshua was concerned.

So here he was, lounging around on a chair in the infirmary with his journal on his lap, waiting to see if Red would come in like Ness had asked him to. Luckily for Joshua, Red chose the time Ness was on duty, and he put his journal aside to watch their little reunion.

Not according plan. Not according to plan at all.

"...hello, Ness."

For now, Joshua wasn't even a blip on his radar, which was good for the boy, considering Red really had no idea what he would do when he met the boy.

Pikachu was just licking some more ketchup, sitting against the leg of Joshua's chair.

Ness would say hello to Pika, but he knew how much she loved ketchup and figured that it would be best not to bother her. Good, this meant he could focus all his attention on his brother. He got up from his chair and went over to Red, the brother he hadn't seen in years.

For a moment, he just stood there, watching Red carefully to see if he could figure out what he was thinking or feeling. He couldn't tell much, other than that Red was tense and probably not very pleased to be here at all. So Ness did the logical thing.

He slugged Red across the jaw.

Some time after Red had left, Joshua returned to the infirmary. He wanted to interrogate Ness before he forgot in favour of other more important (read: amusing) conversations. When Joshua entered, he tossed the otter Ness had given him... a long time ago, at his head in greeting.

"That didn't take long."

Ness was busy with putting things away and filing Red's newly formed record when the doll hit him in the back of his head. Being a soft plushie and being well...thrown by Joshua meant that it was little more than an annoyance. He turned around to answer him.

"I said it wouldn't," he shrugged. Checkups never take long, and knowing about half the information that needed to be jotted down helped speed it along. Ness picked up the doll from the floor and looked at it, wondering what Joshua was doing carrying it around.

While Ness had been picking up the plush, Joshua swooped and stole Ness' seat. Making himself comfortable, he crossed his legs and leaned back in the chair, grinning. "Say, Ness, tell me about your brother. What is he trained in?"

Why was Joshua taking his chair? There were plenty of other chairs to use. Taking someone else's just seemed rude.

"Trained in?" Ness repeated. "Well, he's a monster trainer. Pika looks small and fragile, but she's really strong, too. He also knows some martial arts. He subscribes to the idea that he has to be strong too."
