Being in the army for several years, as well as being in command, had led some interesting people to Shinji. These people ranged in personality and mannerisms, but overall, everyone was different. You couldn't really expect anyone to be a certain way. But from what he'd heard and knew of the Victoria II, they seemed to all be stuck-up, serious, fancypants kind of people who drank tea all the time. As went the stereotype anyway.
But if there was anyone the blond wasn't afraid of, it was military officers, and as soon as the planks went down, he took a leisurely moment to allow the others to scatter onto the deck of the Victoria II. Shinji wasn't really in a hurry, and besides, rushing into things usually got you killed or bleeding. So when his feet touched the wood of the deck, he dropped his hand to the hilt of his sword and waited for the first person to make eye contact.

"You there, go aid the passengers! And you, seaman! Go help with the mechanics in stabilizing the ship!" Honestly, it wasn't as if this was the first battle this vessel had been in - granted, the crew did have a very high turnover rate but still... okay, maybe that could help out with the reason why a good part of the crew was just going around being totally lost. But goddamnit, the idiots could have some fucking initiative at the very least! This was a military ship, not a place to babysit assholes!
The first wave of pirates from the 4423 has made themselves known by now, and there were of those who were (foolishly) brave enough to try and attack him the moment he was spotted. Hijikata wasted no time in drawing out his sword, countering and ( ... )

"Yeah?" the lithe boy shot back, looking extra smug just for the boatswain. "That's a little disappointing." It seemed as though he was in the clear for now with a real opponent who he probably wouldn't be able to strike down in just one hit like he could the others, and the thought made him tighten his fingers around the hilt of his sword.
If he wanted, he could've easily lashed out from this distance, but instead of attacking, he secured his other hand around the bandaged hilt and rose the blade so that it could tap against Hijikata's.
"So what's it gonna be..." The sharp blade ground harshly into the other. "... Mr. Fancy Uniform?"

His fingers flexed against the hilt of his sword, and Hijikata kept his voice steady and calm as he addressed the pirate. "If its a fight you want, pirate, then its a fight you'll get!" Saying that, he quickly snapped into stance and lunged forward, sword flashing under the light as he thrusted out his blade in an attempt at a first strike.

In that split second, there wasn't much time to evade, so Shinji brought his zanpakutou up to block the strike, gripping it tightly. "I ain't lookin' for a fight," he corrected once he was within a foot or two of the man's face. "You're just in my way, so I'm gonna make sure y'get out of it." He pushed hard in resistance against the opposing blade in some attempt to milk a reaction out of him. Maybe to see if it was possible for him to get even more angry. If he knew anything about pissing people off, and he did, it was that even when you thought someone couldn't become more upset, it wasn't impossible for them to become even more enraged and/or homicidal.
But Hijikata really was in his way, and it didn't look like he'd get out of this battle unscathed.

There was a pause as the officer narrowed his eyes to study the other, ignoring how the muscles in his arm had throbbed once in pain from the force he had used to push himself back. Despite the lanky build the other had... it was clear that the pirate - whoever he was - wielded that sword of his with startling strength; enough to catch him off guard. He sure wouldn't have expected a guy like him to posses such power...
Well, that'd mean he would just have to push himself higher then.
"You're going have to do more than that to 'get me out of the way' then," returned the dark-haired swordsman as he rushed in again for another strike, this time coming in from the side.

One of the passengers had taken off in a blind panic, not content to wait in the room they'd all been pushed into.
"Don't go up there! That's where the battle is!"
Phoenix had followed the man on gut instinct -- he couldn't let this guy just rush headlong into a sky battle! He had to do something, and fast, so he took off behind him, trying to call him back, calm him down from the blind panic he was in.
Unfortunately, the wayward man had run up onto the deck, and froze as soon as he saw the fighting. There were bloody corpses littering the deck, outnumbered only by the soldiers adding to the levels. Phoenix felt a wave of nausea, but fought it down, because he had to take this guy back to where it was safe (well, safer).
He lunged forward, taking the other passenger by the arm, and tried to pull him back down the stairs, but it had the opposite desired effect.
The man bolted right into the thick of combat.
And Phoenix, who most certainly was not thinking straight at the moment,

That shove forced the Vizard back a few steps, but the force didn't surprise him. He came here expecting he was going to be fighting skilled swordsmen, so he would have to save the shock for much later. That comment, however, was successful in provoking an answer of his own, and as the man lunged at him, he easily flipped the sword in his hands and parried the attack. As he held his own, the blades scraped horribly against each other, creating a painful friction as the two powers collided ( ... )

There was no way Phoenix was getting past.
Oh, boy. This was bad -- this was really bad. Phoenix wasn't quite sure what to do besides hide. Maybe if he wasn't a threat, no one would pay any attention to him? But then again, these were pirates ( ... )

Too bad he wouldn't be able to rest easy with the knowledge that Shinji wouldn't kill Rou -- in fact, he wasn't here to kill anyone -- because, after all, who would believe the word of a pirate? He would just have to disarm the guy if he could, and only then would he be much less of a threat. Not that he was a threat even now. The blond was sure he could kick his ass with his eyes closed, but that was really just adrenaline talking.
Amber eyes briefly flitted over at Phoenix over Rou's shoulder, lingering only for a moment before returning to the main focus, who was on his knee presently. Lifting a brow, he leaned in closer, applying pressure with his sword.
"We've barely been at this for five minutes and you're already on your knees?" And more resistance. "Are you sure we're on the right ship, 'cause I heard you were a whole lot better than this."
Why yes, that was smarm.

"Shut up," growled out the officer as he narrowed his eyes and with another burst of strength, shoved the blonde away from him with a flurry of sparks from his sword as the metal blades ground against each other from the force. He quickly pushed himself up once he had managed to get Shinji away, standing up and getting into stance once more while he glanced just slightly towards the spiky-haired man and barked at him quite angrily. "What the hell are you doing here, reporter?!"

He didn't want to be a burden here, but he also didn't want to fight. It was a dilemma. Phoenix settled for shrinking back and keeping one eye on the stairwell, looking for an escape route. Why was he caught in the middle of a battle between these ships?
