Its for the name of epic shounen. :D mayovice October 20 2009, 09:24:21 UTC
It didn't take long before Hijikata was up on the top deck of the Victoria II, and even shorter than that before he was starting to bark out orders towards the crew members who were doing nothing but running around and doing nothing but being utterly useless annoyances to everyone else.

"You there, go aid the passengers! And you, seaman! Go help with the mechanics in stabilizing the ship!" Honestly, it wasn't as if this was the first battle this vessel had been in - granted, the crew did have a very high turnover rate but still... okay, maybe that could help out with the reason why a good part of the crew was just going around being totally lost. But goddamnit, the idiots could have some fucking initiative at the very least! This was a military ship, not a place to babysit assholes!

The first wave of pirates from the 4423 has made themselves known by now, and there were of those who were (foolishly) brave enough to try and attack him the moment he was spotted. Hijikata wasted no time in drawing out his sword, countering and attacking those who dared crossed his path. He really didn't want to attack anyone unless he really had to - his cousin was on this ship after all. Supposedly. Even if he hadn't heard from the other for the last few months already.

A snarl escaped the samurai as he made his way away from the group of pirates who attacked him and dashed ahead. He had no time to waste with the small fry - the big ones were his target; the sooner the big ones were down, the sooner the 4423 would retreat. Hopefully.

Yeah, he would need to keep dreaming.

Likewise, Shinji wasn't the only one who was greeted with violence, and in the blink of a eye, he drew his sword out from its sheath and countered so that his head could stay on his shoulders for a little longer. He evaded more than he attacked, and he tried to draw as little blood as possible, but it was slowly growing evident that he would eventually have to spill some. Slamming his elbow into one man's nose -- and from the scream, it was probably painful -- he drew himself away and laid eyes on Hijikata, who really seemed in the moment. Kind of like he was out for more blood than he was, which was probably the case.

As soon as he was within a few meters of the man, he broke into a grin. "This is some welcoming party," he called out, just as he barely avoided a sword swinging past his neck. "I was kinda hoping for some streamers; maybe even--" A slice, across the midsection -- but not his own.

"--a huge 'Welcome' Banner. You military type sure are--" duck "--lacking in the hospitality department."

Hijikata himself had just kicked down the last of the pirates on him in a particularly painful part of a male's anatomy when he heard the voice of the other and whirled around to lay his gaze on the blonde. Acting on instinct first, the boatswain lunged out a fast series of swipes towards the pirate with his blade, all of them missing their mark.

The (non-magic using) swordsman growled as he forced himself to take a backstep, tightening the grip on his blade as he steadied himself and directed a piercing look towards his would-be opponent. He could feel his instincts instantly rang with danger the moment his gaze was cast on one Hirako Shinji, and the boatswain did well to hide the pang of instinctive fear that rolled down his spine. Whoever this guy was, he was clearly different from the rest of the other assholes.

"Last I checked, we don't exactly hold welcome parties for pirates," he returned the call, feeling somewhat stupid even as he did so - the adrenaline was starting to pump in his body, senses sharpening as his mind shifted into the personae of the Demon Boatswain he was so feared for. If blood was going to spilled, then he was going to do it in the way he knew best.

"Yeah?" the lithe boy shot back, looking extra smug just for the boatswain. "That's a little disappointing." It seemed as though he was in the clear for now with a real opponent who he probably wouldn't be able to strike down in just one hit like he could the others, and the thought made him tighten his fingers around the hilt of his sword.

If he wanted, he could've easily lashed out from this distance, but instead of attacking, he secured his other hand around the bandaged hilt and rose the blade so that it could tap against Hijikata's.

"So what's it gonna be..." The sharp blade ground harshly into the other. "... Mr. Fancy Uniform?"

Instincts flaring, the officer reacted the moment Shinji started to move - his hand twitched to bring up his sword right when the blonde tapped against his, and the result caused sparks to fly in the air as metal grounded against metal. Hijikata narrowed his eyes as he took another step back to stop the friction, and this time rose his blade to meet with the other's. His blood was churning, alarm bells going off at what he had just pitted himself against but still... it was only in such intense moments did the boatswain could for once feel alive.

His fingers flexed against the hilt of his sword, and Hijikata kept his voice steady and calm as he addressed the pirate. "If its a fight you want, pirate, then its a fight you'll get!" Saying that, he quickly snapped into stance and lunged forward, sword flashing under the light as he thrusted out his blade in an attempt at a first strike.

In that split second, there wasn't much time to evade, so Shinji brought his zanpakutou up to block the strike, gripping it tightly. "I ain't lookin' for a fight," he corrected once he was within a foot or two of the man's face. "You're just in my way, so I'm gonna make sure y'get out of it." He pushed hard in resistance against the opposing blade in some attempt to milk a reaction out of him. Maybe to see if it was possible for him to get even more angry. If he knew anything about pissing people off, and he did, it was that even when you thought someone couldn't become more upset, it wasn't impossible for them to become even more enraged and/or homicidal.

But Hijikata really was in his way, and it didn't look like he'd get out of this battle unscathed.

Just as what the other had suspected, that comment was more than enough to manage out a reaction from the boatswain who was infamous for having a terribly short boiling point. Scowling even more than before, Hijikata growled before he pushed back against the other's sword before using a burst of strength to send himself back, further away from the blonde now.

There was a pause as the officer narrowed his eyes to study the other, ignoring how the muscles in his arm had throbbed once in pain from the force he had used to push himself back. Despite the lanky build the other had... it was clear that the pirate - whoever he was - wielded that sword of his with startling strength; enough to catch him off guard. He sure wouldn't have expected a guy like him to posses such power...

Well, that'd mean he would just have to push himself higher then.

"You're going have to do more than that to 'get me out of the way' then," returned the dark-haired swordsman as he rushed in again for another strike, this time coming in from the side.

"Wait! Where are you going?!"

One of the passengers had taken off in a blind panic, not content to wait in the room they'd all been pushed into.

"Don't go up there! That's where the battle is!"

Phoenix had followed the man on gut instinct -- he couldn't let this guy just rush headlong into a sky battle! He had to do something, and fast, so he took off behind him, trying to call him back, calm him down from the blind panic he was in.

Unfortunately, the wayward man had run up onto the deck, and froze as soon as he saw the fighting. There were bloody corpses littering the deck, outnumbered only by the soldiers adding to the levels. Phoenix felt a wave of nausea, but fought it down, because he had to take this guy back to where it was safe (well, safer).

He lunged forward, taking the other passenger by the arm, and tried to pull him back down the stairs, but it had the opposite desired effect.

The man bolted right into the thick of combat.

And Phoenix, who most certainly was not thinking straight at the moment, followed.

order = Rou --> Phoenix --> Shinji? ♥ pharaohking October 20 2009, 17:50:41 UTC

That shove forced the Vizard back a few steps, but the force didn't surprise him. He came here expecting he was going to be fighting skilled swordsmen, so he would have to save the shock for much later. That comment, however, was successful in provoking an answer of his own, and as the man lunged at him, he easily flipped the sword in his hands and parried the attack. As he held his own, the blades scraped horribly against each other, creating a painful friction as the two powers collided.

Unphased, Shinji smirked. "We just got started, Military Man. No sense in rushing things." To mirror the strike, he channeled his reiatsu downward, and in a burst of power and light, separated the two of them and sent himself backward again. He could sense that they guy wasn't much of a magic user, so fighting with anything more than that was unfair. But if he had to use his reiatsu in its raw form to keep himself from getting sliced apart, he would do so without hesitation.

And now it was his turn to initiate an attack, so gripping the hilt a little more tightly, the boy sprang forward on quick feet and raised the sword above his head.

...he certainly had felt that one.

Hijikata had to take a few more steps back at that force, his skin and bones tingling due to the magic he had felt coming from the blonde. A magic user as well, then. Hardly surprising, but that certainly mean he would have to kick up the gear even more than ever now - while this wasn't the first time the boatswain had to contend himself with a disadvantage, it had been a good enough while since he had to pit against someone like the pirate. Not that he was in anyway frightened; on the contrary, the officer was only more than ready to face this challenge, and it did nothing but make the adrenaline pump swiftly in his veins.

As Shinji sprang forward, Hijikata himself sprang into action as well, darting forward with blade in hand as he brought it out in order to deflect the attack--

--only to abruptly crash to the side violently as he twisted around when he caught sight of a figure going head-on into the battle. His blade was forced to twist to the side in order to direct the attack away from the newcomer, and the result had sent the officer rolling to the side instead of where in had been earlier, now forced down on one knee due to the lack of strength he failed to pull out. The blades clashed against each other in a blast of sparks, pushing against each other as the boatswain gritted his teeth. Goddamnit, this was the last thing he needed.

Phoenix didn't notice Hijikata at first--he was busy chasing the runaway passenger, who decided that now would be a good time to run back below deck after all. Phoenix made to follow, but a knot of fighting men moved in front of the doorway before he could get there. One of them stood on the stairs, holding off two others in the narrow passage.

There was no way Phoenix was getting past.

Oh, boy. This was bad -- this was really bad. Phoenix wasn't quite sure what to do besides hide. Maybe if he wasn't a threat, no one would pay any attention to him? But then again, these were pirates.

As he slipped his hand under his jacket, closing his fingers around the pistol in his pocket, he was very, very glad that Wolfina wasn't on the 4423 anymore. Phoenix already felt conflicted enough about this fight.

He looked around, trying to find cover, and spotted Hijikata as he blocked an attack that would have come in his direction. Apparently, Hijikata had noticed him.

This just got better and better, Phoenix thought. He backed away, but....part of him didn't want to get too far away from someone he knew, who could fight. Phoenix was part of the Victoria II's crew, right? Would that be enough for Hijikata to help him? Either way, Hijikata wasn't about to kill him, which Phoenix could not say about the pirates. He moved so that he was somewhere behind Hijikata, out of the way of the attacks.

Too bad he wouldn't be able to rest easy with the knowledge that Shinji wouldn't kill Rou -- in fact, he wasn't here to kill anyone -- because, after all, who would believe the word of a pirate? He would just have to disarm the guy if he could, and only then would he be much less of a threat. Not that he was a threat even now. The blond was sure he could kick his ass with his eyes closed, but that was really just adrenaline talking.

Amber eyes briefly flitted over at Phoenix over Rou's shoulder, lingering only for a moment before returning to the main focus, who was on his knee presently. Lifting a brow, he leaned in closer, applying pressure with his sword.

"We've barely been at this for five minutes and you're already on your knees?" And more resistance. "Are you sure we're on the right ship, 'cause I heard you were a whole lot better than this."

Why yes, that was smarm.

The boatswain snarled, teeth gritting as Shinji pressed down harder, fingers curling tighter around the hilt of his sword with so much force that his knuckles turned white. Fuck, it wasn't as if things weren't as messed up as they were already, Now with the reporter on the scene, he wasn't going to be able to go all out like he usually could - that'd mean putting him at risk, and as much as hated it it wasn't going to do any good if the passengers were going to be harmed while he was on duty.

"Shut up," growled out the officer as he narrowed his eyes and with another burst of strength, shoved the blonde away from him with a flurry of sparks from his sword as the metal blades ground against each other from the force. He quickly pushed himself up once he had managed to get Shinji away, standing up and getting into stance once more while he glanced just slightly towards the spiky-haired man and barked at him quite angrily. "What the hell are you doing here, reporter?!"

"One of the passengers panicked!" Phoenix called back, over the noise of battle. "I tried to stop him, but he ran up here! Now the stairway's blocked!" He kept one hand below his jacket, ready to defend himself if he had to, but reluctant to shoot otherwise.

He didn't want to be a burden here, but he also didn't want to fight. It was a dilemma. Phoenix settled for shrinking back and keeping one eye on the stairwell, looking for an escape route. Why was he caught in the middle of a battle between these ships?

Shinji was a little too dumbfounded to make a face, so he settled for staring at the two of them. This guy was an idiot. He didn't know Shinji's strength or any of his capabilities, and here he was, stopping in the middle of a fight to talk to some other idiot who looked about ready to wet his pants. What was this, a daycare?

He tapped his tongue ring up against the roof of his mouth and touched the very tip of his blade to the deck, unimpressed.

"Hey, ladies, this is nice 'n all, but let's save the heartfelt reunion for later, a'ight?"

Pointedly ignoring Shinji's off-the-cuff remark, Hijikata only scowled and bit back a curse as he turned back to fact the blonde, though he was swearing quite loudly within his mind. Goddamnit, this was just the last thing he needed, on top of everything else... the world just seemed to love him at times.

"Make sure you stand back and don't get in the way then," the boatswain went as he turned his attention back to the other, his jaw clenching while his fingers flexed and tightened around the hilt of his blade while his eyes narrowed just ever so slightly. "I can't guarantee your safety out here."

Not when the battle was just heating up.
