It's some sort of morbid fascination. )

Right, right. The volcano. Erupting. Arthur brought himself back to that mindset. He leaned forward, resting his arms on his legs, folding his hands. "Yes. I could tell it was him. But he pretended he wasn't. He acted as if he were someone else the entire time." And it was stupid, and childish, and if only Itou would have been there to see it. Then he would have understood.

But, no! The last thing Arthur needed was sympathy. He needed to be told he was stupid for holing himself up because of Alfred.

"... How old is your brother again?" he asked in disbelief, because that sounded like something a thirteen year old would do, and Itou had half a mind to tell Arthur off for being in a knot about a prepubescent boy.

itou should go dig up that conversation from art's journal godandmyright August 13 2009, 09:32:48 UTC
"Nineteen," Arthur replied, running his fingers through his hair. "Then when we talked on the Network a few days later, he continued to deny that it was him I saw. He even went out of his way to talk to himself as though he were talking to the other person!" Arthur was beginning to get angry again. "I told him I'd let him go, that I'd stop being his brother and let him do as he pleases. But he didn't seem to take anything seriously. He just kept saying, 'I'll be sure to tell Alfred!'"

He hacked it. But he understood nothing with all the talking to himself Al was doing. ceilingitou August 13 2009, 09:43:03 UTC
Itou let Arthur rant on about the issue even as he recalled the last journal entry Arthur had. There was a kid there, which he figured was the brother, and someone called Captain Vohemar who... also appeared to be the brother?

"You're right, he is dumb," he replied with a small frown, trying to wrap his head around that conversation. He could pass it off as the kid having difficulties communicating, but he sure made Itou feel like he had good social skills.

THAT WAS AL'S HEROIC PLAN ALL ALONG HAHAHA godandmyright August 13 2009, 09:51:24 UTC
Arthur had forgotten for the time being that Itou could hack into his entries, so he was not even thinking that the other could have seen that last one. He leaned forward, burying his face into his hands and making a muffled groan. He would not even bring up his suspicion with Gilbert. Arthur was so tired of getting fucked over by people he thought he knew.

"I must be an idiot."

"You have unlucky experiences with siblings, certainly," he told Arthur, eyebrows still knotted a little together. "If he's such a pain, why do you still pursue him so?"

The strategist shook his head, still keeping his hands covering his face. "I don't know! He didn't use to be this way."

"What changed? When did it?" he asked, for the sake of asking, curious now despite himself.

Arthur lifted his head at that and turned so that he could look at Itou. He felt like a fool. "He used to love me... Used to depend on me. But he suddenly decided that he didn't like Ivonian's laws and wanted peace for Reial." Actually, Arthur was not sure what Alfred wanted in the long run. He figured Alfred must have had sound arguments, but he had no idea as to what those entailed. Alfred had become a mystery to him, changed before his very eyes.

And Arthur, it seemed, had stayed the same.

"Wanting something noble like peace for Reial is well and good, but what has he been doing to achieve that?" he asked, feeling that the answer to that might also answer the rest of his questions. Selfish kids who did what they wanted... it was a somehow familiar and unpleasant story for him.

In actually, Roy had pretty much seen most of the exchange between the two - the alchemist had been on his way to visit Arthur and make sure the strategist was all right, but he had taken cover as soon as he had noticed that Itou was around.

Good thing, at that. The way they were acting around each other and the whole incident had been rather telling. Now seemed like the ideal time to reveal himself, however, and that was exactly what Roy did.

Roy knocked on the empty doorframe of Arthur's room, in order to announce his presence.

"Mind if I crash the party?"

Arthur jumped to his feet when he heard Roy. Crap. The last thing he needed at this time was Roy! He'd forgotten about the door. How long had he been standing there?

"..." He didn't even know what to say.

Likewise, Itou also shot to his feet when Mustang appeared, and made to grab his sword from his side -- only... he had left that in his room, hadn't he? He cursed before he could help it.

"Yes, Mustang, we mind," Itou snapped. Of course, Arthur had the last say in the matter. Itou should really, really get back to that friendly persona he was trying to cultivate, but Mustang had startled him and Itou did not take that sort of thing very well.

"You mind, sir," Roy returned, as a not-so-gentle reminder.

What was the analogy? Being caught with your pants down? That was... almost accurate. Almost.

"We were just talking about the races," Arthur spoke quickly, moving away from Itou towards Roy. He would just play things cool. Perhaps Roy had just arrived. There was no guarantee he'd heard the whole conversation.

When it came to Mustang, Itou already knew better than to be optimistic. The man had a talent for being a nuisance. To him, anyway.
