Masamune hadn't even bothered to go to his cabin once he'd boarded, lounging on his trunk instead. He hadn't had some fun in a while, and hell, dealing with his stuff could wait while he saw what this Jabu guy was worth. If Lowell thought they were worthy of comparison, he was gonna be really fun. Even if he was the first mate. Shit like rank didn't matter in this kind of fight, it was just to get to see what he was like.

When he saw this short red guy (who looked jacked as hell, but tough little guys like that usually were) running up and shouting at him, he smirked in glee. This guy seemed like he was going to have as much fun as Masamune himself was. Like he was looking for a fight. "Date Masamune, Dragon of Oshuu. Guess you're Jabu."

He'd expected another swordsman, a guy like him who could do crazy things with a blade instead of just smacking someone around, but Jabu didn't have anything with him. "You want a sword, or you wanna just try and hit me?"

"A sword?" Jabu grinned. "Hell no. This is gonna be a real fight. No hiding behind weapons." He moved into a fighter's stance, fists raised. There didn't need to be any more talking. This guy sure as hell didn't look like much, and swordsmen never had any real strength behind their punches anyway. Jabu foresaw an easy and very satisfying victory. Hell, he decided, he'd even let this guy take the first swing if he wanted to. "Come on," he said impatiently. "You gonna fight, or not?"

Date pulled himself up off the trunk. "Of course I'm going to fight, why the hell else you think I called you up here?" Jabu hadn't sounded like a swords kind of guy. Fists weren't as flashy, but this guy just wanted to try and beat the crap out of him, and punching a guy was perfect for that.

Try. There wasn't any "fighting to a draw" shit with fists. You were either down (and maybe out) or you were up. He raised up his fists and smirked back at Jabu, then almost before either of them were ready, flashed out with a straight left.

Jabu had decided that Date would get the first swing, so he was expecting this one - but not at quite that speed. He managed to dodge it, but barely.

He realized that being out of action with a head wound for an extended period hadn't done anything for his reaction time. It'd been awhile since he'd trained, and this guy was fast. Well-- that just meant he'd have to fight harder, then. His blood was pumping already.

The instant he'd regained his balance from his dodge, Jabu threw a hard right. The faster he knocked this guy out, the better; he wasn't pulling any punches, even this early on.

Shit. This guy meant business. He seemed pretty slow, but as Masamune twisted out of the way of that punch, he realized that would have knocked him back pretty damn far if he'd let it hit him.

Jabu led right-handed. That was good. It meant most of his hits would be where Masamune could see them coming. He leapt a bit to the side to keep both Jabu's fists in his field of vision, aiming once at his head to distract him (he could feel the air rushing past it already, he knew that wouldn't connect) and following up with a blow to his shoulder to drive him back.

Considering that he'd lately taken a battleaxe full-force to the head, Jabu was naturally kind of protective of that area. He overcompensated for the dodge, cursing inwardly when he saw that it wasn't going to connect. He barely saw the other blow before it hit him, and his turn to avoid it was late.

The hit hurt and drove him back slightly, but he forced himself to ignore the pain. It wasn't bad enough to take him out and so it didn't matter. He regrouped with all the speed he could, turning to face Date full-on again - he wasn't going to let him get away from a straight-on hit! - and took another swing, this time aiming lower, for the gut. It would buy him time for another hit if it connected well.

Jabu had reacted to the fake-out about how Masamune'd expected, though that really heavy jerk out of the way probably meant some kind of head injury. He wasn't going to punch any more brains out of a guy who probably needed all the ones he could hang onto.

But damn, that guy could come back from a hit fast. "You're pre-", he started to say, but that was all he could get out before he saw the gut punch coming, and leapt over again only to take half of Jabu's fist in his side mid-step.

He grunted and fought to keep upright and his guard up in case of a followup. Before letting one happen, though (that guy wasn't going to get in another stupid hit on him) he took advantage of the opening from that punch to try and knock Jabu off balance with a hook to his left side.

This one Jabu opted to dodge. The last flurry of punches had knocked his guard off, and he was already getting winded. He took a quick step back, far enough to be out of Date's reach, the better to regain his breath.

"Not bad," he said through gritted teeth. His guard was back up, but he was getting slightly (but only very slightly!) less confident in his ability to end this quite as decisively as he had hoped. He might have to settle for merely winning, instead of grinding this punk into the deck.

fffft I'm imagining this is one of those slo-mo fights like in 80s movies mygunsareon August 20 2009, 03:45:16 UTC
"You mean awesome!" Date laughed and raised his own fists, looking for an opening.

Damn short guy. His head was right there to just punch in the face and send him flying, but no, nothing that was gonna make him useless. At least he was slowing down a little - Masamune was circling him and the guy wasn't turning fast enough. Was he fucking sick or something, getting like this after a couple hits? What the hell was the point of beating up a sick guy? Maybe he should just get it over with.

"Come on. Your turn for a free hit." He leered. Jabu would get careless if he pissed him off enough, and then it'd be over real quick.
