Characters: Vash and Milk Content: The newspaper's race fail is giving the resident pink bunny a headache. Setting: Vash's room Time: After this post Warnings: None
Vash had been waiting, so when he heard the knock, he set his journal aside and hopped off the bed. He opened the door, at first a little confused when he didn't see anyone... but then he looked down. Oh, there she was!
"Hey, Milk! Come in and have a seat." He stepped back, holding the door open for her. Vash's room was actually rather plain. There was a simple bed, a dresser with a radio and a gas lamp on top, and a small table with two chairs.
"Do you want a snack? I should have something good somewhere in here."
He shut the door before going over to his dresser, digging a small box out of one of the drawers. "Don't tell Ryuzaki, but I grab snacks out of his cabin every now and then." He opened the box and left it on the table for her, showing that it held a few various types of cookies, a handful of hard candy, and even a couple of wrapped chocolates.
Vash sat down in the opposite chair, resting his chin on his hand. "So you read today's Dear Lorena, too?"
Unperturbed by the display - it wasn't as though he had any better manners - Vash smiled sadly at her statement.
"Some people just don't have a lot of experience with demihumans. The Winding Way is actually pretty unique in that we have a lot of them on board. So when people are told that they shouldn't like demihumans, for whatever reason... they don't know that it's hurtful for them to act that way."
Milk sighed. "And some people think that only the really terrible things that happen without even the laziest, stupidest excuse in the world are actually racist." She popped another chocolate into her mouth. "Seriously ~miru."
"You shouldn't get too upset at Hana. I know he didn't mean to insult you, or anyone." Vash knew Hana well enough by know to know that he wouldn't hurt a fly. It was a bit of a misunderstanding, that was all.
"It's really easy for people to say that they don't like really ugly, bad things like that, but most of it is a lot more subtle. I think it was good that you pointed it out to him... even if it wasn't so good that you want to hit him."
She groaned. "I know, I know, but it's still annoying ~miru. He kind of deserves it." Milk looked up at Vash. "Do you really think it's going to work?"
"You never know if it'll work unless you try!" He said with a smile and a pointed finger.
"Listen, if the problem is that most people don't know about demihumans, then teach them! Let them know what you're like, and that you won't hurt them just from looking different. It's going to be a slow process, there's no doubt about that, but you shouldn't be discouraged. Anything worth changing isn't going to be easy in the first place!"
"Well," he said, settling back in his chair, "It seems to me that they still don't know that much, if that's what they think. It's worth trying to make them realize that they don't have a good attitude about it... without hitting them, okay?"
"Fine, fine," she said. "But they still deserve it ~miru." The rabbitlike creature paused for a moment. "...I feel a little guilty passing sometimes ~miru."
He was silent for a moment. There were many demihumans that could pass for completely human - Vash himself was one of them, something that only Ryuzaki knew. He couldn't help it, this topic reminded him of...
Vash pushed that thought away before he could finish it.
"The more visible demihumans might have it harder, but... I've known a few that still wouldn't have wanted to pass for anything. In the end, it really doesn't matter how you look... what matters is how you treat the people around you."
"But you're not using it just to look normal, are you? It's easier to interact with everyone here when you're their size! None of the furniture's even made for being that small."
He smiled and reached out, patting the top of her head. "You're cute like this, but it looks really inconvenient for being around tall people like us."
Milk had to laugh at that. "I guess you're right ~miru. It's way easier to go around looking like a human, even though I'm used to being like this ~miru." She sweatdropped and turned a bit red as she remembered that she couldn't even open Vash's door and had probably looked like an idiot. "But it's fine either way."

"Yeah ~miru. I can't believe that people actually think that stuff."

She frowned and stuffed another chocolate in her face. "...If you say so ~miru."
